“Right. But I didn’t meet him. I want to spend some time with him.”

“We’re taking a trail ride on Saturday.”

“Cool. Can I come along?”

“No. But we’ll have a family dinner when we get back.”

“Who’s going on this trail ride? You, Finn, and…Joey?”

“Yeah. Probably.”

Sawyer cocked his head. “Don’t fall into the ‘she’s the mother of my child’ trap.”

“I’m not. I have no romantic feelings for Joey. I’m barely able to forgive her at this point.”

“Okay. Just checking.”

J.T. meant it. But there were a few moments when he found it hard to stay mad at her. She looked really good and spending time with her hadn’t been all bad. When they’d been a couple, they were very happy. They were good together. He hoped they could remember how it felt and use it to raise their son together. But without all the emotions and complicating factors, love brings to the mix. They could be friends and that would be enough. It had to be enough. He wasn’t ready to go any further than that.

J.T. and Sawyer got back by mid-afternoon the following day, and after taking a shower, J.T. called Joey and told her he was home. She agreed to bring Finn to his trailer for dinner.

He spent the next hour straightening up the small space, washing the dishes in the sink, and cleaning the bathroom. By the time they were due to arrive, it looked pretty good. At the last minute, he dug a box of action figures out of the back of his closet. When he moved into the trailer, bringing the box was an accident. He thought it held something else. But now, he was glad he had it.

He looked through the box. It was quite the collection, and he and Sawyer spent hours playing with them when they were kids. He picked up Wonder Woman. It was the one Sage added to the collection. The few times she played with them, she insisted on being Wonder Woman.

At the sound of Joey’s car arriving, he dropped the figure into the box and moved it to the center of the table, then went to the front door. He opened it as they were getting out of the car.

Finn waved, then ran to the small porch. “Hi, Dad.”

“Hello, Finn. Welcome to my humble home.” Finn dashed by him and ran inside. J.T. laughed, then looked at Joey. “I think he likes it.”

She looked at the trailer. “It’s ah…still a piece of junk.”

“Thank you. Come inside. You might change your mind.”

She went past him and through the front door, then stopped inside. “Okay. Not bad.”

“I told you. Besides, it’s temporary.”

“So you’ll be moving the trailer once your house is built?”

“Yes. I already have someone who wants to buy it from me.”

“Good. I suppose you gave him a really good price.”

He smiled. “Something like that. I don’t know why you have such a problem with this trailer. You can barely see it from your place. And compared to the monstrosity you're living in...”

She turned to him and smiled. “I’m just giving you a hard time.”

“Well, stop.”

“And my house isn’t a monstrosity. It’s a historical gem.”

“Oh. Okay.”

Finn was sitting on the small couch. “This place is cool.”

J.T. looked at Joey. “See.”
