“So we’re good?”

“Oh, honey, we are so good. And it seems tome I gave you an assignment while I was gone.”

“Yes, you did. But then you disappeared and I kind of got sidetracked.”

“Well, that’s okay. Because now I can actually, officially, lawfully marry you.”

“Because you have a name.”

“I can also afford to buy you a very impressive ring.”

She shook her head. “I don’t need an impressive ring.”

“I know you don’t, but I still want to get you one. Will you let me do that for you?”

“Hmm. How impressive are we talking about?”

“As impressive as a clear Montana sky filled with stars.”

When Jake pulled in front of the house, J.T. was sitting on the porch. He got out of the truck and went up the porch steps.

“Did I miss my curfew?”

J.T. smiled. “No. I just wanted to talk to you for a minute when you came home. But I was about to think you weren’t coming home.”

Jake leaned against the railing. “I take it you and Sawyer had a conversation.”

“Don’t get upset with him. I twisted his arm.”

Jake smiled. “Is that even possible? Your brother’s a rock.”

“I just want you to know I’m happy for you.”

Jake folded his arms across his chest. “No questions? Concerns? No…what the hell were you thinking, Dad?”

J.T. laughed. “No. I get it. And I think it’s really cool. I like Ember. And she came here and waited a month for you to remember her. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.” He stood and went to the door. “Let me get this for you. I heard you had a little trouble with a door earlier today.”

Jake patted him on the back as he went through the door. “Smart ass.”

They went to the kitchen and Jake got a glass of water while J.T. took a beer from the refrigerator.

Jake nodded toward the bottle. “A little nightcap?”

“I found out my father is human tonight. I think that calls for a nightcap.”

Jake held up his glass, then took a drink. “You guys didn’t talk to Sage, did you?”

“God no. She’s all yours, Dad.”

“She’s going to have a problem with this, isn’t she?”

J.T. nodded. “Yeah. I believe she is.”

Jake drank his water and set the glass in the sink. “I better go get it over with.”

“Good luck.” J.T. headed for the back door. “I’ll see you in the morning.”

Jake turned off the lights in the kitchen, then went to check on Jacob. Ira followed him to the bedroom door as Jake knocked.
