“Dad?”

“Come on in.”

Jake opened the door and Ira followed him into the room and jumped on the bed.

Jacob studied Jake for a moment. “What’s going on with you?”

“What do you mean?”

“Son, you have a terrible poker face. Something happened today. Tell me what it is.”

Jake went to the chair and sat down. “I got my five months back.”

Jacob sat up. “The hell you say.”

“I was in Santa Fe.”

He thought for a moment, then pointed at Jake. “Ember.”

“How the hell?”

“That woman has a terrible poker face, too. She looks at you with such sadness sometimes. I thought maybe you just reminded her of someone.” He laughed. “Her father maybe. But apparently not.”

“We fell in love during those five months. And me remembering who I am hasn’t changed that.”

Jacob laughed. “Well, it’s about damn time.”

“So, you’re okay with that?”

“Of course. But it’s not my place to be okay or not okay with whether or not you move on with your life.”

“I know. But I still want your blessing.”

“You got it. Ember is quite a young woman.”

“Emphasis on young?”

“You’re two grown adults. It’s nobody’s damn business how old either of you are.”

“Thank you, Dad.”

“I may be a grumpy old man, but I can still appreciate a good love story.”

“It’s not too late for you to write your own love story.”

He laughed. “Who the hell would want to put up with me?”

Jake stood. “Seems to me there’s a woman in town who puts up with you on a regular basis. Spent the whole day with you today, as a matter of fact.”

“Lucy?” He shook his head. “Lucy means too much to me. I’d never do that to her.”

“Shouldn’t that be her decision?”

“Goodnight, son.”

Jake moved toward the door. “Good night, Dad.”

Jake went upstairs with Rosie behind him, then stopped at Sage’s door. He looked at Rosie.
