“No. Of course not.”

“I have one more present for you.”

She turned to look at him. “You do? You were quite generous already.”

“Do you like the cowboy hat?”

“I do. And the saddle.”

“I was going to get you a horse to go with it, but I figured you should be able to pick out your own horse.”

“Jake. I don’t need my own horse. I love Button.”

“Well, when you’re ready for something with a little more youth and agility, we’ll get you a horse.”

“So, where is this one more present?”

He got to his feet and pulled Ember to hers. “Come on. I’ll show you.”

He headed for the stairs. “Jake. Where are we going?”

“Up to my room. It’s about damn time you slept in my bed for a change.”

They headed up the stairs and she whispered. “Are you sure?”

“We’re not damn teenagers.”

She giggled. “Then why do I feel like one?”

They went down the dark hall and into Jake’s room. He closed the door and locked it. “Just in case one of the kids needs advice in the middle of the night.”

Ember put her arms around his neck. “Did you lure me up here with the false promise of a gift?”

He kissed her, then stepped away. “No. Go sit on the bed.”

Ember went to the bed and sat down while Jake went to the walk-in closet for a moment. He came back out with a small box in his hand.

Ember cocked her head. “What did you do?”

He sat next to her. “It took me a while to find the perfect one. And I’m still not one hundred percent convinced it is.” He handed her the box. “Open it.”

Ember took a breath, then opened the box. It contained a beautiful square-cut diamond surrounded by tiny chocolate diamonds. The matching wedding band was a circle of chocolate diamonds. She gasped, then looked at Jake.

“Oh my gosh.” She put her arms around him and hugged him.

“Does this mean you like it?”

She nodded, unable to say anything.

“Chocolaty Chippity diamonds seemed like the way to go” He moved back a few inches and wiped a tear from her cheek. “I need to ask you a question.”

She whispered. “You already did.”

“I know. But now that it’s official. Ember, will you please marry me?”

She nodded again, then hugged him. “Yes.”

He spoke into her ear. “I fell in love with you twice in six months.” He moved back again. “Let’s get that ring on your finger.” He removed it from the box and slipped it onto her finger, then kissed it. “Merry Christmas, Ember.”
