Sage had been a little distant since Ember started staying at the house. Even though she and Jake had talked about waiting until they were married, two days after Christmas, Ember officially moved in.

It was now the first week in January, which meant the wedding was only a month away, and Ember wanted to figure out a way to bond with Sage. She found her in the training pen lunging a horse. Ember went to the gate and watched her for several minutes before Sage noticed her. When she did, she slowed the horse to a walk, had him make a few more circles around her, then stopped him. Sage went to the horse and patted his neck before removing the lunge line and walking over to Ember.

“Hi.”

“That was impressive.”

Sage hung the line over the top rail of the fence. “I love working with the horses.”

“I can see that. Your dad told me you started riding when you were two.”

She nodded. “Yeah. He got Sawyer and me on a horse pretty early on.”

“One of the few memories that came back to him while we were in Santa Fe was of the three of you on the back of a horse. He was leading you. Probably in this very pen. But he didn’t get any background details. Just the three of you. And he said you had on a bright yellow cowboy hat.”

Sage took a breath. “Oh my gosh. I still have it. I loved that hat.”

“That’s probably why he remembered it.”

Sage went through the gate and they went to the wooden seat outside of the pen. “He said he dreamed about Mom one night.”

“Yes. He did. And you and the boys were in that dream, too. Only older.”

Sage was quiet for a moment before she said, “Yeah.”

“The only other person he had a memory of was his grandmother.”

“Noko Esty?”

“Yes.” Ember glanced at Sage. “He saw her a couple of times.”

“He was very close to her. She was a substitute mother to him.”

Ember reached for Sage’s hand. “I know you’re not totally okay with your dad and I getting married.” Sage tried to protest, but Ember patted her hand. “It’s okay. I understand. But I do hope someday we can be friends if not something a little closer.”

Sage nodded. “Of course.”

“Good. So on that note. I have something to ask you. I’d be fine getting married with just my dad walking me down the aisle. But it’d sure be nice if you’d be my maid of honor.”

Sage made a small gasping sound. “You’d want me to do that. Even…”

“Yes. It’d mean a lot to me. And I think it’d mean a lot to your father, too.”

Sage hugged her. “I’d like that. I really would.”

“Good. That makes me happy.”

“The boys are standing up for Dad, right?”

“Yes. As co-best men.”

Sage thought for a moment. “So, technically, you should have a co-maid of honor.”

Ember smiled. “I guess so.”

“You could ask Aunt Genny. She’d love to do it.”

“You think so?”
