“I was ten. How would I know? He and his brother seemed cool. They were in high school. They didn’t pay me much mind. But they weren’t mean to me. So…”

Scott and Aaron came up to them.

J.T. smiled. “Uncle Scott.”

Scott smiled. “Seems a little strange, right? Maybe we can just go with Scott.”

J.T. nodded. “That works for us.”

Aaron looked up at Sawyer. “Are you my uncle like John?” He glanced at Scott. “I’m mean Jake.”

“No. Actually, we’re your cousins.”

Aaron frowned. “That’s weird.”

Sawyer put a hand on Aaron’s shoulder. “The only think you need to worry about is that we’re family.”

Aaron smiled and Scott nodded before adding, “I’m glad Em has all of you. I’m going to miss her.”

“Well, you’re welcome anytime. You and the little man, here.”

“Thank you. I’m sure we’ll take you up on that. I promised this kid a soda, so, we’ll see you in a bit.”

They wandered off and Sawyer looked at J.T. “The kid’s right. It is weird.”

“Just go with it. It’s bound to get weirderwhen the O’Connell family part two comes along.”

Sawyer watched Jake and Ember on the dance floor. “How about a little wager?”

“What do you have in mind?”

“Whoever gets closest to the month of our first half-siblings' birth wins a case of beer.”

J.T. contemplated the offer. “Good beer?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay. Go ahead. Pick a month.”

Sawyer thought for a moment. “August. A year and a half from now.”

J.T. nodded. “I’ll go with next April. Fourteen months.”

“Wow.” Sawyer held out his hand, and they shook on the bet.

Jake saw his two sons shaking hands on the edge of the dance floor. “Uh oh.”

“What?”

“My son’s just made a bet.”

Ember glanced over her shoulder. “How do you know?”

“I know my sons.”

“Do you know what they bet?”

“No. I guess we’ll find out soon enough.” He glanced toward Ember’s parents. “Your parents are being polite to me.”
