After reading the letter, I lean my head back on the lounge chair and close my eyes.

Clarity begins to emerge from the chaos. The reality is that a tiny life depends on us, and all the pettiness and resentment seem insignificant in the grand scheme of things. It's the baby—our baby—which matters most. Her letter reminds me she must've been so scared to tell anyone for a long time, and now that I've found out, it is time for me to show my support.

It's scary because I've never considered growing a family at my age—but I loveher. I don't care how many babies we'll have together…fuck…as long as Emily wants them, I'm happy to oblige.

I lift my gaze from the note, and as I do, my eyes lock onto a distant figure walking along the shoreline.

It's Emily.

She moves gracefully along the edge of the water, her presence giving me an understanding of the woman I've come to love so much.

I leave the note behind and make my way towards the shore.

Chapter thirty-five

Emily

Iwalk barefoot along the sandy beach, my long, flowy skirt swaying with each step. My heart beats wildly in my chest, a mix of anticipation and anxiety filling me. I've just left the book and my heartfelt note for Alex, and now, I'm not sure what to expect.

The soft, cool touch of the ocean waves brushing against my feet brings a momentary distraction. The rhythmic sound of the sea provides a comforting backdrop to my racing thoughts. I can only hope that Alex will see the sincerity in my words and understand the reasons behind my choices.

As I continue to walk along the shoreline, I keep my eyes fixed on the horizon, waiting for any sign of his presence. The gentle breeze rustles my hair.

In the soft sound of the waves brushing the shore, I turn to see a figure running towards me, and my heart flutters as I recognize the man.

Alex.

As Alex closes the distance between us, his features become more defined in the soft coastal light. Dressed in a casual linen shirt and shorts, and his skin slightly tanned, he looks effortlessly attractive… making my breath catch in my throat.

“Hey…” I begin.

Alex takes a purposeful step forward. Suddenly, he's very close, so close that I can feel the comforting warmth of his embrace. My heart flutters and the world seems to shrink, trapping us in this tranquil bubble of time and space.

His lips meet mine with an intensity that sends a jolt of electricity through my body. It's a kiss filled with longing…and desire. I let the moment consume us for a while.

When we pull away, I whisper, “I guess this means you liked the book.”

Alex smiles. “It was very thoughtful,” he admits.

Then, our eyes meet…it's like he's looking right into my soul.

“Emily,” Alex says softly, his voice filled with tenderness, “I should've understood that you needed time to tell me. I love you, and nothing will change that. I loved you even before I knew you were carrying our baby. I'm here for you every step of the way. We'll face whatever comes together.”

My heart swells with warmth as I feel the weight of his words. It's like a heavy burden has been lifted from my shoulders, and I can breathe freely once again. With teary eyes, I reply, “I love you too, Alex. I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner, but now we can move forward together.”

We share another sweet, lingering kiss on the tranquil beach.

When we part, Alex gazes into my eyes, and then suddenly, he asks as if he realized something important, "Emily, does Chris know about the baby?"

I let my fingers trace the fine lines of his jaw before answering. "No, I haven't had a chance to tell him yet. I meant to tell you first all along…when I felt ready."

Alex nods. "I think it's time we tell him. He deserves to know—you know how much he cares about you."

His firm voice reassures me that everything will be okay.

"I was thinking the same thing," I reply, leaning in to kiss him again. "We'll tell him together."
