“Good.” I tugged her closer, pressing a kiss to her stomach over her shirt. “Now. What are we going to do today?”

“I have a plan for studying?—”

“I want to go shopping first.”

“B-but we can’t study while shopping.”

“Exactly.”

“But Dusk said?—”

“Fuck Dusk and his rules,” I snorted. “I’m years out of date. I don’t even have a phone.”

“Won’t he be upset?” She shrank a little.

“I hear it’s quite the show when Dusk is upset with you.”

Her whole face went beet red. “I don’t think… he’s…” She trailed off, and I grinned.

“Come on. Get dressed. We’re going out. We’ll grab breakfast on the way.”

SHATTER

He’d stopped at a breakfast place on the way to the mall, and I’d had a stack of pancakes, which tasted amazing.

Now we were wandering about, and I was out in public with my alpha.

It was refreshing to be away from the academy, but it was more difficult than I’d anticipated. People kept looking at him funny, which I got, but he was kind of mine now. Or… I was his. Whatever. It should mean something.

Was itnormalfor people to stare at someone as much as they stared at him?

Hewasgood looking—like a magazine model, tall and lean, with tanned skin, and his brows were dark, which contrasted the rich green of his eyes. He always had a casual mess to his auburn hair that fell from his bun just in the right ways to seem deliberate (though I’d watched very carefully as he tied it up this morning and was disappointed to find he didn’t do anything special).

Everyone’s eyes seemed to snap to him, to me, then to the dark bond on my neck, and then right back to him.

We entered a clothing shop, and there was a very pretty omega who was helping people pick out fashion. She reminded me of Roxy a bit, with glossy hair and a beautiful smile. Except, when she approached us, she placed a hand on Ransom’s arm before spotting me. She withdrew it until she saw my dark bond, then she returned her gaze to Ransom like I didn’t exist. When her hand touched his arm the second time, I growled before I caught myself.

I cut it off in an instant, embarrassment flooding my system, though she flinched back, eyebrows shooting up.

I couldn’t shake the red from my vision, the world a blur of rage that I tried really hard to manage. I did, though. Uncle had been right about one thing; the bond had balanced out my instincts a bit.

I didn’t settle until Ransom led us out of the store.

“Hey, Little Reaper, look at me.”

His palm cupped my cheek, and I snapped my gaze up to him. It was hard to miss the delight down the bond from him, even when he was trying to keep his expression serious.

“Why… why did she do that?” I asked.

“Some people rank bonds like that. You’d own a princess bond. We’d both own a normal bond, but the alphas own a dark bond. The direction of the claim means some people think we’re open for?—”

“Flirting?” I asked, my lip trembling.

“Something stupid like that.”

“No.” My voice was an embarrassing whine, and I glanced around to see a passing couple shooting me funny looks. “Dusk said I seduced him into the bite. That means it’s mine—you’re mine.” Ransom had difficult hair, just like me—that ranked the same as a scent match, right?

Ransom’s smile soothed my nerves. “I am,” he said, leaning down and pressing his lips to my forehead.
