I cried out as the orgasm that had been building surged through me. Each stroke was another jolt of pleasure, and low whines sounded from my chest as he drew it out over and over, his own release warm in my core as he filled me up.

“Fuck, you’re so sexy,” he growled as he pressed into me again. “Now. Next chapter?”

THIRTY-ONE

SHATTER

Dusk was at my side on the couch the next evening, head buried in a textbook. For the last hour, I’d been edging closer on the couch as he studied.

Things were getting better. But I knew he was still reserved with me because of the dark bond.

“How’s the week going?” I asked, peering at hisArkology: Genetic and Genomicshomework. “Have you seen them?”

It was Wednesday, and I knew they had a lot of classes with the Lincoln pack.

He nodded, turning to me. “I’m doing alright, but Umbra was never good with this to start with. He’s about ready to crack.”

“But… he can’t go near them?—”

“I know. I’m thinking of requesting a transfer. We might be at this academy for a while if you want to stay, so better to find him shit he’s actually interested in. Or he could drop some classes entirely if he wanted. We intended to get close to them, but that’s off the table now, anyway.”

“Wouldyoudrop them?”

“No.” He glanced down to the textbook. “I’m actually not hating it.”

I brightened at that. “Really?”

“Yeh.”

“I could… help you study some time?” I offered.

He grinned. “Once you’re done helping Ransom, maybe.”

I nodded, but a blush was creeping up my neck.

“What?” Dusk prodded, but Ransom had emerged from his room and was making his way down to the kitchen.

“It’s not going so well on the studying front,” I whispered.

We’d tried again this morning but it had ended in a lot of sex. Study sex. I couldn’t lie and say I didn’t like it, but… “I don’t think he’s going to catch up,” I whispered.

There was a small smile curving the edge of Dusk’s lips. He dropped his voice to match me. “Does he need to transfer, too?”

“I’m doing my best. But uh… we’ll have to see.”

He nodded. “What about the ball?” he asked. “You don’t have to go, but Ransom mentioned you brought it up…”

“Roxy said something about a… a revenge dress?” I eyed him, wondering if that meant anything to him.

He cocked his head, leaning back a bit, a little twinkle of malice in his eyes. “Didshe?”

“But if Umbra’s having a hard time?—”

“It’s on Saturday. Decebal just texted, and we’ve got to follow up a lead. He’s booked it for the same night as the ball. I could ask Umbra if he wanted to join Decebal, then he won’t have to sit in the same room as the Lincoln pack.”

“What’s the lead?” I asked. He’d put the files we’d brought back—the ones with all my notes on them—into his safe, but I had them all organised in my head like a textbook. If there was more information, I needed to figure out where to file it.

“I’ll give you all the details, but it might be a dead end. I don’t want to get your hopes up.”
