But I drew up as I realised what Shatter’s fear was for.
The apartment was in ruins, the fading scent of the Lincoln pack lingering in the air.

My aura split the air and I felt Ransom slip into madness for a flicker, hackles up, every instinct dialled to a hundred. He was holding Shatter against him, scanning every inch of the room.
My shoes crunched on smashed plates and bowls as I stepped in.
“Get her out,” I growled.
Their scents were fading, but it didn’t mean they weren’t still here.
“No…” Shatter’s voice broke. Then she was trying to throw herself from Ransom’s arms. To the hallway… To…
Fuck.
Her breathing was ragged.“Let me…”She cried, almost wild.“Dusk!”
“I’ll go first,” I said.
I reached her nest to find the door off its hinges.
My heart tripped over itself as I saw what was inside.
The destruction of the rest of the house was nothing compared to what remained of Shatter’s nest. There was almost nothing within that was recognizable. The bed was the only thing that stood within the wreckage.
The faded scents were of an alpha’s fury.
“What?”That was Decebal down the line.“What happened?”
“They broke in.”
I spun as I felt something. Nails digging into my arms. Shatter was there, her eyes wide as she reached the nest.
“Wait—”I tried to stop her, but too late.
Her sob rose in the air, the most broken sound I’d ever heard in my life as she saw what was within. It shattered me. Ransom drew her back, wrapping his arms around her.
“How did they get in?” he demanded. “The door was locked.”
“Fuck…”My blood chilled, and then I was stepping back, turning and striding across the hallway to my room. The door was open, and I stopped at the doorway.
“Listen to me,” Decebal sounded urgent on the phone. “We know what they did.If the Lincoln pack bites Shatter, theywillsteal the bond from you.”
Stealthe bond?
I’d bitten her. No matter how it had destroyed me, her safety was the only gift that had never brought me an ounce of regret.
Decebal’s voice was faint, the phone at my side.“You have to make sure they cannot find out who you are.”
I stared around.
The room was ruined, and one of my windows was smashed in.
