Finally, feeling ready, I cracked the door, peering out. Coconut and plum were the first scents I caught in the air, and sure enough, Flynn was right there.

Rightin front of me.

“Hi,” I said awkwardly, still holding the door mostly closed.

He frowned, gaze meeting mine for a long moment, and then lifting to the kitchen beyond.

“Is your pack okay?” he asked. “Dusk left abruptly. He didn’t look well.”

“Yes,” I said too quickly. “He’s fine.”

I couldn’t explain the sudden sickness in my throat, or the absolute need that gripped me to lie—to ensure that the alpha before me never saw Dusk laying on the kitchen floor, asleep.

Vulnerable…

Before he could say anything, I slipped out and shut the door behind me so he couldn’t see in.

I don’t know why it was so imperative. It just was. Dusk had fought through hell to get back to Umbra. I might resent everything he’d ever done, but I couldn’t deny the strength in that loyalty, just like I couldn’t deny my instinct to protect it.

I fingered Dusk’s keys in my pocket, making sure they were there. Icouldget back in.

I blinked, reality flooding back now there was a door between me and the alphas who had captured me.

Whywas I worried about getting back in?

I should bethrowingmyself into Flynn’s arms.

“I…” Flynn trailed off, looking unsure, glancing down at where I was gripping the keys in my jacket pocket. Then he looked back up at me, and saw his pupils were blown.

Oh… Oh my God. I’d had the door open for a while.

Had he caught my scent?

If he had, what would that mean?

Did he know who I was?

“I just wanted to check in,” he said again. He looked intense. Too intense. “Are you sure I can’t speak to him?”

“No. He’s uh… doing something important with Umbra.”

“Okay.” He took a step back, then paused. His eyes fell to my shoulder, and I glanced down to see a stain of red in my hair.

Umbra’s blood.

Oh…crap.

He looked back at me, eyebrows raised. “Areyouokay?”

“Yes. I am. Definitely.”

He didn’t look convinced.

“I promise.”

Promise?Really, Shatter?

Still, he continued staring at me with pupils that were definitely blown wide. “I…” He trailed off. “Shatter…”
