I dropped them.

“I…” My words were failing. He was close, far too close, beautiful green eyes I could get lost in. I realised his hands were pressed to the wall on either side of me.

“You are worried about being seen with me, but did you know there are already rumours out there that you don’t want the Kingsman pack?”

Uh… fuck.

“Are there?”

That wasn’t good. If people thought I was disloyal?—

“Well, howcouldyou?” Eric asked. “When you can’t take your eyes off us?”

My fists balled in my skirt as I stared at him. “I… I don’t… not on purpose?—”

“I hope the rumours are right.”

My mind raced a million miles an hour.

“We’re going to make you a formal proposal. We’ll give you our star, and then you’ll have a real choice.”

Their star?

Hehadto be joking.

This was madness. “Why would you risk that?” I asked. If I said no, it would be humiliating for his pack.

“Because I think there’s more to this than meets the eye.” He reached out, and I jumped as his touch grazed my cheek. “I think you want us as much as we crave you, and I’d risk rejection if there’s the smallest chance you say yes.”

I tried to shift away from his touch without being too obvious. “But i-if I say no, and then you drop Roxy, you’ll still have to take another omega.”

“Yes,” he replied. “And it won’t be her, and she won’t remind us of you every day.”

He took a step back thank God, clearly done, but before he turned the door handle he looked back at me. “Did you go through heat with them?” he asked.

My mouth popped open. Was hesupposedto ask something like that?

I didn’t think so. It absolutely couldn’t be good etiquette, no matter how out of the loop I was.

“If you had, I think I would be rather relieved.”

“Why?”

“Because if you had a heat with them and there’s still no bond, then perhaps we do have a chance after all.”

When the door of the closet shut, I was left in a terrible silence. I waited a long time, mind numb. When I stepped out into the hall, for a moment it was as if the fading scent of passion fruit was drowned in midnight opium.

It was my own imagination, forcing me to realise that my mates had fallen for me without ever having caught my scent.

And they were too late.

Eric: You know what I hate? How hard she wants us to work just to get some.

Gareth: You’re the one who picked her.
