“I don’t want to talk about something else! I want to find my best friend!” she yells, throwing her hands up in exasperation.

I open my mouth to argue, but I’m interrupted by the blare of a car horn.

“That’s Cal,” Belle says with sudden sadness.

“Mo chridhe, please…” I beg. I’m not sure what I’m begging for at this point. For her to stay? Drop the Ezra topic? Keep fighting for him because I’m clearly too weak to do it myself? All of the above? None of the above?

“I’ll talk to you later,” she says softly and then rushes past me to the bedroom door.

I let her go. Stunned and stuck in place by how quickly the night went from being the best night of my life to one of the worst. The sound of the front door slamming and then a car door gets my feet moving. I walk over to the window and watch my best friend drive away with my heart.

BRAD

She’s never alone.Never fucking alone. What twenty-four-year-old has their brother drive them to and from their booty call?

“Fuck!” I shout for the millionth time into the universe.

I’ve been watching her since the moment her plane landed, waiting to get her alone. If I can just get her back, I can break her again. Make her push everyone else away.

Make her mine.

Mine.

Make her pay.

Pay for what she’s done.

Pay for what it’s cost me.

Pay.

Do I keep sending her flowers? Mess with her some other way? I could. It would be easy.

But it would also make it easy for her stupid brother to figure out it was me. He has his fucking lawyerup my ass as it is.

So, here I am, sitting in the fucking shadows.

Waiting.

Watching.

Until the opportunity arises.

Until I take back what is mine.

BELLE

“Areyou just going to sit there grumbling to yourself, or are you going to tell me why you’re mad?”

I shoot my brother the most annoyed look I can muster, and he just laughs at me. Full on, head thrown back, laughing.

“Nothing is funny right now, Callahan,” I snark.

“It’s not my fault you look like a grumpy puppy when you’re mad,” he says with a shrug, not caring that he’s just making me angrier. I’m about to tell him off when the doorbell rings.
