“How does this work exactly?Sloane didn’t share the specifics of the contract.”

I raise an eyebrow.“Contract?”

“You bid on me, so I’m probably obliged to do stuff with you.Just so you know, there are certain things you can’t force me to do,” she says, jutting her chin out.

I bite back a laugh.“Certain things?”

“I have boundaries.I know virginity auctions exist, and I hope yesterday wasn’t one.It was just an auction for charity, right?”She shakes her head.“I feel so stupid for not asking these questions before you bid ten thousand dollars for me.”

“I’m not going to take your V-card, Hannah.Unless you ask me to,” I tell her while holding the door of the Wildlife Center open for her.

Her jaw drops to the floor, but she doesn’t grace me with a reply.I let my gaze travel down her body, the curves of her hips filling out her pants beautifully and stirring my dick. How can a girl like her still be a virgin? The jealousy I felt the first night at the bar is back in full force.I’m relieved she’s never shared the sheets with another guy, but I never want her to be with another man.I want to be the one who makes her come for the first time and whose name she screams as I take her V-card.

“Good morning, Grizz,” Emily, who works at the front desk, says, interrupting my thoughts.

“And a good morning to you too,” I tell her.

She frowns.“Are you okay?”

“Sure, why?”

“Nothing.I’m just more used to you being a grump.A lovable one, of course,” she quickly adds.

Next to me, Hannah snorts.

“Emily, this is Hannah. She’s here to learn more about what we do.I’ll also be taking her up the mountain later today, so can you keep an eye out for the animals while I’m gone?”

“Sure thing, Grizz. And nice to meet you, Hannah.”

Hannah follows me into the corridor with a nervous look.“Up the mountain?Isn’t that dangerous?”

“We’ll go for a hike.Don’t worry, I could navigate these mountains with my eyes closed.”I lead her further down the corridor until we reach Willow’s enclosure, the baby fawn brought in a few days ago.

Hannah falls to her knees.“Oh, my God, this is the most adorable thing I’ve ever seen!”

I lean against the gate of the enclosure and nod.“This is Willow, a rescued baby fawn.Once she’s back on her feet, we’ll take her to the forest.Or at least, I hope so.She might not be able to return.”

“Why not? What’s wrong with her?”Hannah asks with a frown.

I shrug.“If her habitat gets disturbed by, I don’t know, a huge building project, she won’t have a home to return to.”

Hannah’s shoulders drop as my words sink in.“Oh.That’s sad.”

“I know.”

“But my boss always compensates every single tree that gets cut down for his lodges.”

“How?”

“Trees get planted somewhere, in his name. And he pays for those.”

I let out a bitter laugh.“Planting a tree in a totally different location to try and compensate for ruining an ecosystem isn’t honorable.Besides, do you know how many of those trees survive their first years? Not to mention the decades it takes them to reach their full maturity. And a field of trees might look nice and noble, but it’s hardly a great spot for wildlife.Creating a sustainable ecosystem takes more than planting a few trees.”

“I didn’t know that.”

I tilt my head, studying her.“It’s a common misconception.A lot of people think that planting trees is a quick and easy fix, but it’s not that simple.”

“Really?”
