“Surprised to see the two of you down so early,” Sadie’s joke caused Hailo’s neck to crane toward me as if her mother didn’t know she was no longer a virgin.

“Morning, Ma,” I kissed her cheek before giving Renni one. I would’ve kissed Christian, too, but he was busy stuffing his face.

“Good morning, Gianni. Your plate is in the microwave.”

“Anybody ever told you that you’re the best mother-in-law?”

Sadie smiled after sipping her coffee. “My son tells me all the time.”

Hailo dramatically rolled her eyes before interjecting. “Morning Mommy. I have a few things to handle. Are you good with the kids?”

The two of them ran down a list of things that had nothing to do with me as I grabbed my plate from the microwave and joined my kids at the table. After finishing, I dumped my plate and paused before my wife.

“I’ll call you later. I love you.” I grabbed Hailo’s jaw and planted a few kisses on her lips that made Renni giggle. She always found our displays of affection hilarious, but I never left home without kissing my family because I knew the danger of our business.

“I love you too.”

Sliding into the car, I drove downtown to the casino, trying to cure my irritation. Quest was typically on point because he didn’t want to see us more than he had to. I didn’t take it personally because I didn’t like micromanaging grown men. Unfortunately, that’s how I was starting my day. Pulling into the parking spot, I climbed out and headed for the entrance.

Pausing inside, I searched the floor for a familiar face and found one behind the bar.

“Hey, Gi. What can I do for you?” Alex asked.

“Wassup. Is Quest here?”

“Yeah, I think he’s in his office. I can call him down.”

“I’d appreciate it.”

“No problem. Can I get you anything while you wait?”

“I’m good, Alex. Thanks.”

She nodded, walked to the opposite end of the bar, and picked up the phone. After a quick conversation, Alex let me know Quest would be down shortly. I took note of all the customers enjoying the casino. It was also generating a lot of money for the city and Sky’s pockets. She deserved every cent after everything she’d gone through.

“Gianni Meraux. To what do I owe the pleasure?” Quest asked, wearing a rigid expression as he approached me.

“I need to holla at you in private.”

Quest turned around in the direction he had just descended and, for some reason, led the way to another room.

“What can I do for you?” He asked when we reached our destination.

“Not have me come here because you can’t keep your word.”

“What the fuck are you talking about?” Quest drawled, his tone dripping with mockery.

“Your payment was short.”

“Wasn’t shit short,” he chuckled as if it was impossible.

The corner of my mouth lifted sarcastically. I didn’t need his money and had more important stuff to do than lie.

“Your payment was short, so you need to get with whoever and figure it out.”

Quest was irritated. I could tell by how his eyes roamed the small room as he leaned against the table.

“I’ll look into it. If we’re done here, I have more important shit to do,” Quest announced.
