Dylan nodded again.

I wasn’t going to pry it out of him. Whatever was going on, I’d find out all about it after the weekend.

“Okay, no more tears. You are going to go away with your aunt, uncle, and cousins this weekend and come Monday we will deal with all that. Sound good?”

Dylan nodded and wrapped his arms around me.

“Have a good time!” I said, kissing both my boys as my sister stood at the door waiting for them to grab their bags.

“We will.” Dylan took his bag along with his brother’s and headed out the door to where his uncle was standing waiting for them. Beth watched for a moment and then turned back to me.

“So, what are you going to do with yourself this weekend?”

“I’m going up to The Oasis Retreat,” I said, my body already craving the quiet and relaxation the place promised.

“Ohhh Grant and I were just there for the day. It’s wonderful. Are you—never mind,” she said, stopping herself from asking whatever it was she was going to ask.

“Am I what?”

“Nothing, never mind,” she said again.

“No, tell me.”

Beth let out a sigh. “I was going to ask if you were going to be alone, but then I remembered that you and Zach decided to just be friends.” The look of disappointment on her face said it all. I knew she wanted me to get involved with someone again, and I’d disappointed her with the news that we were just going to remain friends.

I couldn’t help but smile. “Well, I won’t be alone. He is going to come.”

A look of excitement came over her face, and she was about to wrap her arms around me, but I stopped her.

“I invited him, only because he is dealing with a lot of things as well, and he looked like he could use a break. Don’t get too excited. We have separate rooms,” I said, fully stopping any ideas she may have of us falling into some sort of romantic venture for the weekend.

She gave me a look I’d never seen before and shook her head. “Maybe the gods of romance are in play after all,” she said, rubbing her hands together.

“Just say nothing to the boys,” I said.

“Never. I hope you have a good weekend. Call me if there are any issues.”

“I will, have fun.”

I’d gotten Grace off with my mother, and then I swung over and picked up Iris. We’d driven out to The Oasis Retreat. Iris went over to the front desk to check us in and get our keys, while I went to the washroom. When I returned, I noticed she was still at the desk, now looking frazzled.

She glanced over her shoulder and looked right at me, then turned back to the girl behind the desk and said something. I walked over, placing my hand on the small of her back to let her know I was there. She looked up at me, worry in her eyes.

“What is it?” I questioned. “Did they lose our reservation?”

“Something like that,” she answered, watching the girl she’d been talking to speak with another employee. “They seem to have lost one of our rooms. They also informed me they are fully booked and apparently have no record of us needing two rooms.”

I was about to try to calm Iris down when the girl approached the desk and placed the keys down on the counter. “So, we are indeed fully booked both today and tomorrow. We only have the room that was booked under your reservation number—a jacuzzi room, with one king bed. We unfortunately have nothing else.”

I could sense Iris was on the verge of a breakdown but wasn’t sure I should interfere.

“I don’t understand. When I spoke to the agent I booked with yesterday, they assured me we’d have two rooms.”

“I’m sorry, but without that email you said you received confirming the two rooms, we can’t do anything. Not that we could anyway, because we have no other rooms available.”
