“It’s probably the dress.”

“It’s probably what’sunderthe dress,” Kevin mutters, walking behind me.

I turn over my shoulder and look up at him as I tug the door open.

“Absolutely nothing, Kevin.”

The look on his face is enough to tell me he’s jealous, and I like it.

Tonight should be fun.

Kevin

I don’t like this guy.

It’s not that he’s doing anything to make me dislike him, but it’s the vibe I get every time he looks at Shelby like he’shungry.

I mean, I get it. She’s an attractive girl. Fuck, she’s stunning. But he’s old enough to be her father.

Like me.

The restaurant is busy. It takes a minute to get seated, but I make sure I’m sitting across from Tommy because I don’t trust him.

“So, what do you do, Kevin?” Tommy asks me, casually resting his arm on Pauline’s chair.

Pauline flushes and bites her lip, and I groan inwardly. She couldn’t be more desperate if she tried. Maybe if she hung a sign around her neck advertising it, she could be.

“I’m a builder.”

I don’t ask him what he does because I don’t fucking care. He looks like he’s waiting for me to ask too, but he’s in for nothing but disappointment. Pauline glances between us and forces a smile.

“What about you, Tommy?”

I don’t miss the way Tommy puffs his chest out and smirks.

“I run a car dealership back in the city.”

Pauline’s eyes widen, and Shelby cocks her head, trying to appear interested.

“Really?” Pauline asks, crossing her arms and pushing her cleavage together.

Fucking hell.

“Yep.”

“Kevin’s daughter is in the city,” Pauline says, making eye contact with me.

I don’t miss the way her gaze lingers on me, either.

Not happening.

“You have a daughter?” Tommy looks surprised, and I can’t think why. I certainly look old enough.

I nod but don’t give him any more details.

“She’s Shelby’s best friend,” Pauline continues. “Absolutely gorgeous. And she snagged one of the hottest bachelors in town, too.”
