I nod.

“Sounds great. It’s a shame we can’t party.” I wink at her bump, and she giggles.

“Girl, I can’t even drink coffee or dye my hair.”

“The price we pay, huh?”

Ivy strokes her bump lovingly, and a lump rises in my throat.

“I can’t wait to meet them, whoever they are,” she admits with a gooey smile.

I rest my face against my hand and join her with the gooeyness, staring at her bump in amazement.

“I still can’t believe there’s ababyin there,” I grumble. “I had my money on the stork.”

Ivy laughs.

“No, it’s much more fun making them this way.”

My smile fades.

It must be nice to fuck someone while wondering if you’re going to create something so beautiful together rather than wondering what happens next.

Will he kick you out?

Will you sneak out?

Will he tell you it was a once-off and can’t happen again?

Ivy pays the bill, insisting on it as she drinks both shakes. It’s a short walk back to her apartment, and I lean against the elevator wall gratefully as it rides up to the twelfth floor.

Maybe this is what I need—a break. A change of scenery.

“I can’t wait to get my feet up,” Ivy confesses, sliding her key into the lock. “I need a massage and—damn, this lock!”

She jiggles the key around until it clicks open, and she sighs with relief.

“A bath. With wine.”

“Not yet, mama,” I say, wagging a finger. “Not till you’ve finished cooking.”

Ivy smiles and looks at me.

“Wait till it’s your turn. You’ll have a little family, too, one day.”

This time I can’t even force a smile.

Because there’s nothing I want more.

When we return to the apartment, I hear deep laughter from within. My stomach tightens, and my palms sweat when Ivy’s face lights up.

“Oh, is that my dad?!”

Please, God. Don’t be.
