I freeze, glancing at Ivy, who has clearly overheard.
“To the city?” I say slowly, my ears ringing.
How much of a coincidence is this?
“Yes! And his home is beautiful, Shelby. Of course, your room would be huge compared to the one in Hendrix.”
“Mom,” I say, shaking my head. “Don’t you think this is a little fast?”
“Don’t be ridiculous, darling; I’ve known Tommy most of my life!”
I can’t argue with that, but Jesus.
It’s sosoon.
But it does solve my problem.
Instantly.
We move here, and I can save the money to find my own place without imposing on Ivy and Griffin.
Even though Tommy is a creep, I can handle myself.
Plus, I’d get to see Ivy every day, and when she has her baby, I’d be here!
“Okay,” I say carefully, meeting Ivy’s eyes. “It does sound exciting.”
“I knew you’d think so!” Mom squeals, turning away from the phone to tell Tommy how excited I am.
“Mom, wait, what about our home? In Hendrix?”
“Oh, darling, we’ll sort that out. But isn’t this exciting?”
I chat with her a little longer before ending the call feeling a little numb.
“Wow,” Ivy says, gaping at me. “What the fuck just happened?”
I stare back at her and shrug.
“Looks like we’re moving to the city!”

“Fourteen-twenty, please,” the girl at the checkout says. She looks like she’s high, and in Hendrix, anything is possible.
“Okay,” I say, handing her a twenty-dollar bill. She gets my change but takes her sweet time about it.
Finally, I’m on my way out of the grocery store, two packs of beers swinging in a bag by my side.
The sun is just about to set, and I know the view from my back porch will do nicely with these beers.
It’s a shame they’re not cold, but I’m flexible. I can drink warm beer.
I hope I don’t want more than eight because I’m not driving back here in an intoxicated state. I’ve been drinking heavily every night since I got back, and a few times, I’ve driven back pretty drunk just to buy more. Luckily I’ve made it here and back in one piece, but I’m still annoyed at myself. I don’t want to make a habit of it.
I’ve got whiskey at home, though, so I can drink that if I still want more.
