“Kevin?”
I frown and glance over to the sleek black car beside me and, more importantly, at the woman closing the trunk.
It’s Pauline.
She looks good, too. She’s dressed in tight clothes, but they don’t make her look trashy, almost classy.
Nice.
“Pauline, how are ya?” I drawl, glancing toward my truck, so she gets the message. I don’t want to talk to her any longer than I have to.
It hurts too much.
“Listen,” Pauline says, her eyes darting around us. “I just want to say that whatever went down between you and my daughter, it really fucked her up.”
She stares at me and crosses her arms.
“Shit, Pauline…”
“What I’m saying is, it’s over now, right? You aren’t seeing her anymore, are you?”
Fucking hell. This isn’t a conversation I want to have, not now, not ever.
“No.”
“Okay, good.” Pauline looks a little relieved. “We’re moving out of town, just so you know. I think it will be good for her.”
My stomach turns to ice.
“We?” I growl as she nods, oblivious to my tone.
She tucks her hair behind her ear and continues.
“Tommy, Shelby, and me.”
My vision tilts, and suddenly it’s tinged with red.
“You’re moving in with him?” I rasp, stepping closer to her. “That fuckingsleazeball?”
Pauline steps back, stumbling a little before she composes herself.
“Who the hell do you think you are, Kevin? How dare you call my fiancé that?!”
Oh man, oh,man.
This woman is fucking clueless and gullible.
“He isn’t interested in you,” I spit out, trying to control my breathing. “He’s after Shelby.”
Pauline looks incensed, her skin flushing to the tips of her ears. She pokes me in the chest with each word she says next, and for the first time in my life, I want to punch a woman.
“Not every man over forty is a pervert, Kevin. Just because you like themyoungdoesn’t mean every man does. Keepawayfrom my daughter.”
She glares at me before getting into her car, leaving me there, trying to catch my breath.
