The cab came to a stop at a corner. Jack stared for a split second, unable to believe his eyes. Across the street, two men wrestled a body into a car. In the dim glow of the streetlights, he could make out very little, just a flash of long brown hair. But it was enough. He recognized her instantly.

Eva.

The van sped off as Jack jerked the cab’s door open and sprinted across the street, dodging traffic. It flew around a corner, wheels screeching, as Jack spotted something on the pavement. He scooped it up.

Eva’s phone. The screen was still lit up with a message to him: I need some time to think. I’ll talk to—

Fuck.

He raced to the open door of the cab he’d just left. He dove inside and barked an order to the driver to follow the van, as he thumbed the numbers 9-1-1 into the phone.

These people, whoever they were, were dangerous, ruthless, and would stop at nothing to get what they wanted. Whatever that was.

If he didn’t get to Eva in time, he knew Antonio’s worst fears would be realized, and Eva’s fate would be the same as her brother’s.

As her father’s. As her mother’s.

As all the people who had loved her and lost their lives too soon.

I’m not going to let that happen, Eva. I’m on my way.
