“I gave you guys a key in case of emergency,” I tell them.

“It is an emergency. You need us, so you don’t have to eat all this cake by yourself,” Jena says.

“And the champs,” Erin adds as she grabs the bottle and starts to twist.

I walk over to the cabinet beside the fridge and snatch four flutes. Erin fills them with bubbly and passes them out.

Taeli raises hers into the air. “To new adventures,” she declares.

We all follow suit and clink.

“Oh, we have a present too,” Erin says as she reaches into her bag and pulls out a small box.

I take it from her hands and open it. Inside is a tiny gold key pendant on a delicate chain. I lift it from the box.

“This is gorgeous,” I utter.

“It’s engraved,” Jena says.

I turn it over, and the back of the key is inscribed with the words Boss Bitch circa 2022.

The waterworks start again.

I hold the necklace to my chest and sniffle. “You guys!”

“We just wanted you to know how proud we are of you, and if you ever get scared or overwhelmed, you just put that thing on and remember who the hell you are. A boss bitch,” Taeli says.

They are the boss bitches. I don’t know what I’d do without them in my life.

I clasp the chain around my neck.

“I love it,” I say.

“We love you. Now, let us eat cake,” Jena says.

I put my forgotten burrito into the fridge, Taeli slices the cake, and we spend the rest of the evening finishing it and the champagne off.

They are the best friends a girl could hope for.
