I chuckled. “Welcome to my personal hell.”

“You have my unending empathy, believe me.” He shifted his gaze to the hall. “Did Cole say anything to you about the earthquake?”

“Not a peep.”

“Tight-lipped bastard. I know he felt it too, but he refuses to talk about it.” Donovan walked around my office, picking up things off the shelf and setting them back down. Always on the move. Restless, like Seth. “How do we get him to admit it?”

“We could bring Brooke Hudson up here and ask her to touch him.” I gave him an evil grin as I leaned back on my chair with my fingers threaded behind my head. “That would get his attention real quick.”

“She the other half of his battery?” When I nodded, he let out a barking laugh. “The universe has a mean-ass sense of humor. Should we tell him?”

“Nah. It’s a lot more fun to let him find out on his own.”

The phone on my desk lit up with Seth’s name. Donovan shifted his gaze between it and me. “You going to answer that?”

“Nope.” I was not in the mood to deal with Seth again. If I thought for a second he had come to terms with the idea of me and Audrey, I would’ve answered, but I had no doubt he’d spent the last hour pacing his hotel room and working himself into another bout of mad.

“He’s our brother.” Donovan’s tone held a deep note of judgment. “You need to figure this shit out with him.”

“I already got the lecture from Cole this morning. I don’t need it from you, too.”

Donovan held out his hands as he took a step back. “Don’t give me that attitude. I’m not lecturing, I’m telling you the way it is. Fix it.”

“I will.” Just not today.

Donovan left and I dumped all the papers on my desk into a drawer. I didn’t have the head for numbers right now. There was no point in continuing to stare at them like they’d eventually get around to sorting themselves out. I went over to my office window and watched the hive of activity on Stardust Parkway with my hands laced behind my back.

In the distance, over the short cliffs near my house, a black cloud hovered. I narrowed my eyes. It dipped and swirled in the sky as if it were mocking me. Looked like the curse had ventured away from the cave, but knew well enough to stay back from people. At least for now. Soon it would gather enough strength to make a play for our minds. I could only hope Audrey and I continued to gain control over our powers while we figured out what we needed to do to bind the curse again. And not lose our island and our lives in the process.
