“I’m actually coming to you as a concerned citizen.” He widened his eyes, giving the appearance of pure innocence. I didn’t trust it for a second. “For the sake of both you and Wes.”

I pursed my lips. “How so?”

“I’ve been telling him for days to pull his head out of his ass and go talk to you, but does he listen? No. Granted, I’m probably the last person who should be handing out advice about relationships, but he’s not happy, you’re not happy, which makes me unhappy.”

I rolled my eyes. “God forbid our personal issues makeyouunhappy.”

“Exactly. Now you get it.” He spun me out and pulled me back in again, whipping me around so fast, I nearly lost my balance. “So, I figured I’d help move this communication thing along. At great detriment to myself, a sacrifice which neither of you are going to appreciate, but I’m pointing it out anyway.”

“Of course. Your reputation for nobility precedes you.”

“Use that sarcastic tone all you want“—he booped me on the nose—”but I’m actually a damn good friend, who is about to get his ass kicked in two point two seconds.”

“What are you talking about?”

“You’ll see,” he said. I turned my head, looking for a way off the dance floor, but Finn gripped my chin to hold me in place. “Don’t look, this is for you, too.”

“What’s for me too?” When he didn’t respond, I poked him in the Adam’s apple, and he gagged. “You’re being weird and it’s starting to annoy me.”

“Wes is here.” When I snapped my gaze toward the entrance, Finn stepped on my foot. “I said don’t look. Act like you’re thrilled to be dancing with me. Maybe lose the scowl.”

It finally clicked into place. Finn was trying to get a reaction out of Wes. A somewhat sweet, if poorly thought out, gesture. So what if Wes saw us together? Finn was his best friend. He knew how his warped little mind worked.

“I appreciate that you’re trying to make Wes jealous, but it’s pointless.” I pushed out of Finn’s hold, putting a few feet of space between us. “He knows you wouldn’t seriously hit on me, and all the acting classes in the world couldn’t make me look at you the way I look at him.”

“Maybe my plan wasn’t to make him jealous. Maybe I wanted you to admit you’ve had feelings for him all along.” He winked. “In which case, success.”

Did I just get outmaneuvered by a guy with the mental maturity of a twelve-year-old boy? My bottom lip stuck out as I frowned. “I didn’t say I had feelings for him.”

“You absolutely did, and my work here is done.” Before I could open my mouth to respond, he darted into a sea of rippling bodies.

I shook my head, a reluctant laugh rolling off the end of my tongue, when Wes pushed through the crowd. His eyes burned with intensity and his expression was thunderous enough to send anyone in his path scattering. While I’d seen him mad before, I’d never seen him this furious. Why did it have to be so damn sexy? He hadn’t even reached me yet and I could already feel my magic trembling. The horny bitch.

As soon as he reached me, he took my hand to pull me off the dance floor. “Let’s go.”

“Um, no. I don’t think so.” I yanked my hand out of his grasp. “I don’t see or hear from you for days, and this is how you approach me? By dragging me around like a caveman?”

His lips thinned. “We’re going outside to talk.”

“The hell we are. I have nothing to say to you right now.” I spun around to march away. The next thing I knew my ass was in the air as I was lifted off my feet. He slung me over his shoulder, and I pounded my fists against his back. “Put me down, asshole.”

He ignored me, tightening his grip on the backs of my thighs. I hated how good it felt to have his hands on me again. I could already feel my magic lighting up after days of being dormant. It frolicked around inside me in dips and swirls that made my stomach swoop. Without another word, he headed for the door.

And a thick trail of ice followed behind us.
