I couldn’t stay here for very long. It was only a matter of time until Malcom figured out that I wasn’t dead, and neither was Zag.

He would come back for me.

That wasn’t going to happen.

Thankfully the police had been able to control what was being published about the explosion, and they had led people to believe that there weren’t any survivors, but it wouldn’t be long until the news found out the truth.

I probably had a few days before the truth came out, so I needed to get out of my house and Miltonville altogether.

Kit was still waiting for me when I walked back into the house, and I scooped him up into my arms.

“Did you miss me?” I whispered.

He purred loudly and burrowed his head into my neck.

“I missed you, Kit.” I pressed a kiss to his head and looked around.

I was home, but it didn’t feel like home anymore.

In my mind, I had already checked out.

This place wasn’t my home anymore as much as I wanted it to be.

Kit and I needed to get out of Miltonville, and soon.
