I want it.

God, do I want to be a part of that.

I’d give up my reputation for it. I’d give up my status in the elite.

I’d give it all up to be part of a family.

So then why am I sitting in this car?

“You’re a fool,” I tell myself in the mirror.

But am I?

Somehow, after all this time in their company, I’ve come to care for the assholes—even Gage, with his complete disregard for respect and etiquette, and Archer, with his penchant for ordering me around.

I slam my fist against the steering wheel. “Fucking hell!” I snarl.

With a savage movement, I jerk the keys from the ignition and kick the car door open. The keys jingle in my now steady hand as I kick it closed and hit the lock. The beep is loud in the silence of the country.

My spine is straight as I walk back towards the farmhouse, my strides measured and confident. All the etiquette training I took comes in handy as I step up to the door and swing it open.

Four pairs of eyes stare at me.

There’s surprise in Eric’s gaze and something else—excitement maybe. Booker just looks shocked. Heat dances in Gage’s eyes, but it’s Archer I look at. I no longer shake or shiver as I stare at him.

“You’re back,” Archer comments. There is no emotion on his face, but his eyes say it all. He’s not surprised. It’s almost as if he expected this outcome.

With a scowl, I stride inside and toss the keys on the table. The sound ricochets around the room. For a second, I worry about Booker, but he’s too surprised for the sound to trigger him.

“I’m no one’s pet,” I snarl. “If you need me next time, come get me. Don’t call me like a dog.”

Archer stares up at me from his seat, and for the first time, the corner of his lips kick up in something more than smug assholery. “I guess that means you’re one of us now.”

I sniff. “I’m going to clean up.” I head for the stairs and the shower above.

I don’t want them to see the excitement on my face. This is still a dangerous game I’m playing. They are not safe, not really, but if I’m one of them, they are safe enough for me.

Birdie disappears, and once again, I’m Genevieve fucking Dalton.
