She didn’t know why, but Violet felt chastised.Talk about being humbled.

Hayden chose that moment to look in her direction. When she mouthedSorry, he angled his head and gave her a small salute.

She saluted back.Time to scoot.

“GREAT SHOW.” Hayden entered the sound booth as Violet started the string of commercials between their two shows. “I caught the last hour today.”

“Thanks.” Violet removed her headphones and shook out her dark hair, sending it cascading over her shoulders and halfway down her back. “The man who called in to confess his undying love for his mother’s best friend was interesting. In the first hour.”

“Wish I’d heard that one. That’s quite a pickle. What’d you tell him?” Hayden dropped onto the chair beside hers, trying not to stare at the lovely vision she presented.

Her cheeks flushed. “I, um . . ..”

“Violet?” He tried to catch her eye. “What’d you do?”

“I told him to call your show. His name is Arnie, and he’ll be calling around seven-thirty.”

He laughed. “Passing the buck, are you?”

“Come on, Hayden. We both know you’re much better qualified to answer that question than me.”

His brows arched. “Ri-i-ight,” he said slowly. “Because I’m an insufferable man?” He tapped his fingers on his chin. “Come to think of it, Momdoeshave this friend who’s pretty . . ..”

Violet balled a piece of paper and tossed it at him.

Chuckling, he caught it with one hand. “Before you go, we should talk about ProjectGetting to Know You.”

“If you want to cancel, I’ll understand. No hard feelings.”

“No way you’re getting out of it that easily.” Hayden started to wag his finger but stopped himself in time. Violethatedthat. “Besides, you kind of owe me one.”

“I’m sorry for calling you insufferable, but sometimes you are.” She stared at the clock on the wall. “And I’m sorry for . . . making assumptions about you.”

“Apology accepted. I hope it wasn’t too painful for you. I hope you can forgive me, too.”

Her brows arched. “For what?”

“Being a man, I guess. So, on Saturday, from two until five, are you still available to help me out?”

“Yes. I said I would. What do you have in mind?”

Kissing you.“How are you at decorating?”

“Well, I suppose it depends on whatkindof decorating. Cake decorating is an art, and I stink at it. However, I’m fairly decent at putting together an inviting room.” Violet cocked her head to one side. “Why? Are you looking for someone to help jazz up your humble abode?”

“Jazz up my humble abode?” Hayden chuckled as he began his set-up. “I love your quaint, old-fashioned expressions. There’s a dance at Goldenrod High on Saturday night, and I’ve volunteered to—”

“Decorate?”

“Yes, and I’m also going to chaperone at the dance. I figured what better way to get to know my co-ho . . . co-worker than by working together on a decorating project? Teamwork and all that.” Man, that was a slip. WhenwasCharles going to tell Violet was going on?

“Makes the dream work,” she quipped.

“I can climb a ladder as well as the next guy and hang things, but knowing where to put them and how to make them look pretty isn’t my thing.”

“I might worry about you if you did.”

“What?”
