“Youthought it was me in the room?”

“Yes, but now I know it was your brother.”

“Why?”

She touched her face. “He looked the way you used to. Clean shaven. Short hair. Army cut.”

“All right, and you said that while hestoodover you, you felt a pinch in your arm?”

She hesitated, confusion clear in her eyes.

“What?” he pressed.

“I remember feeling the pinch and the door opening. I think someone else was here too.Although, his was the only face I saw.”

“There was a heavy dose of morphine in your system, so you could be confused about the timing.”

“Yes, that's true.”

She rubbed her forehead and squeezed her eyes shut as though she was searching her memory, trying to piece the events together. “Don't worry. We willfind out what happened to you, and who did it.”

“Do you know where Aiden is?” Josh asked him.

“I wish I did. I’m afraid we’ve lost touch. I haven't spoken to him for quite some time.” Truth was, he had no idea where his brother was.

“We believe it’s possible he could have been here last night. He has a prior relationship with Sylvia,” Josh said “Perhaps even a current one, if the rumors in town are true.”

“The last I heard, helivedin Texas. I’m heading to my mother’s place next to see if she has an exact address.”

“Keep me in the loop,” Josh said.

Chase nodded as he walked toward the door. He turned back to Jacquie as he reached the doorway. “By the way, There was no sign of the blue truck in the back or front parking lots.I will check with hospital securityon my way out to see if they have cameras outside with security footage for us to look at.”

Her eyes widened and she bit her lip as her gaze shot to Josh.

Josh frowned. “What’s this about?”

“Jacquie thought she saw the same blue pickup truck in the parking lot this morning, the one that had been at the gas station last night. If she’s right, then she and Sylvia are still targets.”

“I don’t like the sound of that,” Josh admitted.

Jacquie straightened the covers over her lap. “Hopefully, I can go home soon, then we won’t have to worry about it.”

Josh shook his head. “Then I’ll have to have a guard here and at the house. You’re staying put.”

“No way! I need to see my dog.”

Before she could say more, the doctor walked past Chase and into the room. “Good, you’re awake. How are you feeling?” He picked up the clipboard and started flipping through her chart.

“Any chance I can get out of here?” Jacquie flashed wide, hopeful eyes.

“I’d like you to rest first, if possible.”

“I can rest a lot better at home. In my own bed. Without constant interruptions,” she added, staring at Chase.

At that moment, a woman wearing a bright yellow sundress breezed through the door with a basket full of muffins on her arm and a huge smile on her face. “Good morning!”

Jacquie’s expression brightened. “Callie. Thank God. Did you come to break me out of this place?”
