Ignoring Peter, I continued to pull a shocked R.J. outside, “Get me out of here. Now!”

Jake’s motorcycle sat as an open invitation. I tossed R.J. a helmet as I slipped one over my head and straddled the bike. To my total and complete surprise, R.J. climbed on and revved the engine before peeling out of the driveway to Peter’s loud curses.

“Rae!” R.J. shouted over the wind, “Hold on honey.”

I lay my head against his back and tightened my arms around his waist as I resisted the

urge to have a good ugly cry right here on the back of the bike. I had no idea where we were going, but I didn’t care. The only thing I knew for sure was that I had to get away from Peter and this was the only way I knew how.

“Thank you!” I yelled, knowing he could hear me.

Distraction was a good tactic. R.J. could help me with that. Maybe we could find a place to stop and hide for a bit.

“Hey little darlin’, I’ve got this.”

His fingers slid to my thigh where he squeezed, his large hand reluctant to let go. Was it my imagination or had there been a spark in R.J.’s eyes when I kissed him? No way. We’ve been best friends, all of us since we were kids. If he had feelings for me, I would have known by now.

The wind whipped around us as we headed to the end of the dirt road and entered the freeway. Cars blew past us and stared. My guess is that I was a little conspicuous in boyshorts and no socks or shoes, wearing a black leather motorcycle jacket and matching helmet on the back of a Harley, my arms around a big muscular guying wearing leather, sporting skull tattoos similar to Peter’s, and a Ravage Riders MC emblem on his back.

What can I say? I have good taste.

A small chuckle escaped my lips until I thought of Peter and then I scowled.

“Rae? You alright love?”

Love? Did he just call me that? And honey? And darlin’?

I didn’t know what to think as we continued to ride far away from the safe house and to the east, which didn’t take me home either. R.J. was protecting me now. He wouldn’t take me home until he knew that my place wasn’t being watched. At this point, who knew?

A half hour later I was freezing. The wind nearly froze the bottom half of my body.

My teeth chattering, I called to R.J. “I’m freezing!”

“I know. We’ll stop soon. I’m just looking for somewhere that will be hard for Peter to locate for a bit. He’s gonna find us sooner or later Rae.”

I sighed, knowing he was right. Peter was probably livid right now.

In fact, I sure hoped he was angry. Maybe that would make him see reason, “Then we figure it out until he does.”

R.J. nodded, pulling into a strip mall that had a women’s clothing consignment shop. He pulled the bike around the rear of the building and parked it, taking my helmet as I stood.

“You need clothes and shoes. You’re freezing. Come on little darlin’. We’re gonna spend some money,” he winked and grabbed my hand, intertwining his fingers with mine.

This felt like way more than simple friendship. R.J. had never been so obvious and nonchalant at the same time, “R.J.? Is there a reason you keep calling me all these endearments?”

I could have waited to ask, but right now I was sick of secrets and lies. The truth had way more appeal than anything else.

He dropped my hand and moved to cup my cheeks, “If I was any more obvious right now it would be ridiculous. I fucking love you Rae, as much as Pete, and I don’t care right now. I just want you to know, for once, how much I care about you.” His lips pressed to mine in a kiss that made my toes curl, so filled with passion and longing that I was completely overwhelmed.

Shocked, I didn’t resist his kiss or push him away.

R.J. didn’t give me a chance to respond but pulled me into the store and scanned for the women’s clothing section. Fifteen minutes later I was in the dressing room with R.J. right outside the door as he scanned the storefront every other minute, “Anything fit?”

Yep. Everything I picked up. I was sort of unhappy with buying used shoes, but I needed shoes so it was unavoidable, “Yes, but I’m not fond of the shoes.”

He turned around and smirked, “Don’t be a snob darlin’.”

The way his eyes roamed over me reminded me of Pete. R.J. had never let his eyes assess me so greedily before. I swallowed hard and pulled a denim jacket on over my silky shirt. Cute tight fitting jeans and the used boots added to the look.
