“How does California sound for now?”

**

LATER THAT NIGHT, WAYNE, Elise, Sarah, and Wayne’s two nieces, Libby and Ashley, sat out on the back patio of Sarah’s place and gazed up at the twinkling stars. Wayne’s words poured easily from his lips as he recited all the things he had always dreamed up about California.

“The sky is blue every single day of the year,” he said. “Along every street, a movie star stands, smoking a cigarette and giving you this horrible glare. People eat tacos from taco trucks on every corner, and behind every garage door is a secret speakeasy, where you can buy cocktails that cost more than my mortgage.”

Elise and the other girls giggled madly.

“You have it perfect,” Elise said. “How do you know all these details?”

Wayne gave a funny shrug as he lifted his wine to his lips. “I just have this way about me. I know things.”

“Don’t mind him, Elise. The man’s arrogance has stuck to him like glue all these years. I imagine it’s here to stay,” Sarah said.

“I can’t believe you’re getting out of here for a while,” Libby said. “We thought you would never take a vacation again.”

“Michael said the same thing,” Wayne said. “Guess it’s time to finally prove all of you guys wrong. Besides, the famous Elise Darby asked me to go with her. How could I turn down a request like that?

When Elise and Wayne said goodnight hours later, Elise hugged the girls and Sarah close and told them they would have many more nights, just like this, in the coming winter months. “Maybe you can even meet my kids,” she offered.

“The more, the merrier on Mackinac in the wintertime,” Sarah said. “This place becomes a bit of a ghost town. We have to fill it up with as much laughter and love as we can.”
