Clearly, Daniyal had some reason to do so.

Maybe it was risky to go into business with someone who clearly had a lot to hide.

But then again, we all had shit to hide, didn’t we? And who the fuck knew what kind of life he came from, what he’d needed to do to survive?

I was inclined to believe that, sometimes, you did what you had to do to make your life better. Even if no one else understood. Even if the woman you’d been in love with since you were both kids didn’t understand.

“Seems like we’re going to be working together,” I said, watching his face for a reaction.

All he gave me was a small nod, his eyes looking off at the parking lot instead of at me.

“There’s a lot more to Zayn than the friendly, laid-back, partygoer, isn’t there?” I asked.

To that, Daniyal tossed his cigarette, clamped a hand on my shoulder, then moved back into the club.

Damn if that wasn’t the fucking smoothest way to answer someone without actually answering them I’d ever encountered.

We were at the club for another two hours before we all agreed to head off, Zayn climbing in the back of a car that Daniyal had waiting at the entrance of the club, even though I swear to fuck he’d just went out all of half a minute before us.

“What?” Huck asked as he caught Donovan watching the car a little harder than seemed necessary as it drove off.

“I think Zayn is a lot more than he’s letting on,” Donovan said.

“Why’s that?”

“Because that was a Rolls Phantom, but stripped down to look like something a lot cheaper. And those windows?”

“Let me guess. Bullet resistant,” Huck said.

“Polycarbonate. The shit they use in banks. All in, I’d say he dropped over six-hundred grand on that car. And that watch?”

“Rare?” Huck asked.

“Steel Skeleton. Thirty-five grand.”

“And he was fucking joking about giving it to that chick,” Levee said.

“Man, hedidgive it to her,” Cato corrected.

I mean, yeah, we all had money.

But not “toss thirty-five grand at a random woman you’ll never see again” kind of money.

“Well,” Huck said, exhaling hard. “We will get Arty on it. Maybe ask Booker too. See what we can find out. And hope some of that extra cash falls in our laps too. Alright. I’m getting home to my woman. What are you all doing?” he asked.

“I’m hanging here,” Levee said.

So were Cato, Donovan, and Alaric.

As we were all expecting, Remy, McCoy, and Che were also going home to their families.

“And I’m assuming you’ll be with the doctor until further notice.”

“Yeah. If that’s alright.”

“Fine by me so long as you answer your phone if I need you.”

“Always,” I agreed, nodding.
