“No worries. I’ll hold the fort here.”

“Just ensure that your fort doesn’t crumple because of your illicit and ill-advised feelings for Tiya,” Shaurya said.

“The same woman you actually like, but you’ll never accept it aloud, when the truth is obvious to us,” Aaryan said.

Vihaan pressed a hand to his forehead. “Enough, okay? Why do I even confide in you two?!”

“Because we will tell you the truth no matter what,” Shaurya said.

Vihaan turned to his twin. “Before I forget, Jatin Sood mentioned that he was close friends with Dev’s maternal uncle, Raj Chauhan. Do you remember him?”

Aaryan’s face scrunched. “I’m not sure. We were in school for most of the year and the only thing I do remember is some cousin of Dev who’d visited one summer. I really don’t recall it very well, to be honest.”

“Well, Dev’s uncle lives in the US. Don’t know if that is important to us at all. Just thought I’d mention it nonetheless.”

Aaryan nodded. “We need all the arsenal we can get against Dev Luthra.”

After some more conversation about their plans for the next week, his brothers stood and left to go work in their respective offices.

As soon as they left, his mind returned to Tiya. He needed to warn her. But more than that, he just needed to see if she was doing okay.

He texted her.“Hey. Have you reached home?”

“Yes. Why?”

He was relieved to hear she was home and safe.

He typed out a reply.“I want to talk.”

“Not right now. I’m busy.

Heaviness settled in his chest. After all their interactions in the past week, her refusal to talk to him was rather unsettling and disappointing.

“I do need to talk to you. Can we meet soon?”

“I’m travelling the whole of this week. Going to Mumbai tomo morning… Work.”

He breathed a sigh of relief. If she wasn’t in town then she’d be safe in any case. He could wait until she returned to talk this out in person. Hopefully, by then he’d have decided how to explain the situation to her without giving much away.

He wrote back.“I need to meet your dad…to discuss business with him.”

“Sure. Call and set it up with him. I’ll text you his number if you don’t have it. He’ll be happy to meet you.”

Her nonchalance irked him.

“When do I take you out on another date?”

“Not needed.”

“It’s not needed to show your parents we’re a couple?”

“No…let’s talk more when I’m back. I gotta go.”

He rose, feeling agitated. What the hell did she mean by those vague statements? Was she ending this thing with him? So soon? And why did he feel so miserable upon coming to this conclusion? This was what he wanted from her. Still, her cold-shoulder stung. He wanted the fun, spunky and playful Tiya back, not this cold version of her.

He pinched the bridge of his nose. Damn! His brothers were right.

He was well and truly fucked.
