A slight smile curled on his upper lip. “But you get to choose. The work the family does isn’t about killing people. It’s about business transactions, Doctor Washington.”

“Please call me Sarah.”

“As I said, out of respect I can’t do that.”

“For fear Gabriel will beat you. Fabulous.”

He shook his head. “Mr. Giordano has a good heart, an even better soul, but he has requirements to the Cosa Nostra that he must accept or face death.”

“Meaning what?”

He glanced over his shoulder as if he was telling some trade secret and if caught, he’d be executed. “His father would have him killed.”

“Jesus Christ.” The news hit me hard. “That’s fucking insane.” I didn’t care I was cursing.Good girls don’t curse. At this point, I was no longer the same woman I’d been even six hours before.

“It is the way of the organization and has been for centuries.”

“That was in Italy,” I insisted.

“Yes, but traditions never die.”

“How long have you worked for the family?”

“A long time. I was a kid on the street with no future except death or prison. Anthony Giordano took me in. I became a part of the family.”

I almost laughed in his face. “But Gabriel was going to kill you without question.”

“Because of how much he cares for you.”

That was twisted as hell, but I didn’t say it to him. “I don’t care for him. I don’t want to be here. I didn’t do anything to the man or his family.”

Dillon appeared uncomfortable and pursed his mouth.

“I’m sorry. I know I have no right to say anything to you. I’m certain my conversation with you will make your life more difficult. I’m just…” There were no words that would fit in order to finish the sentence. “Is it true that Gabriel never wanted to take the position he was forced into?”

He nodded and said nothing.

“And his… men resent him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because it is an honor to be made Don of the family and Mr. Giordano ignored the traditions, pretending he wasn’t a part of the family.”

“He wanted his own life; therefore, he now has to prove himself.” I knew Dillon couldn’t answer that. I closed my eyes briefly, images of Gabriel’s face floating into my line of sight. Goddamn it. Why couldn’t I get the man off my mind?

“Can I get anything for you or the dogs?”

“Goldie and Shadow.”

“I’m sorry?”

“The golden one is named Goldie, for Goldie Hawn and Shadow because from minute one, he was always by my side.”

He smiled for real, his eyes lighting up for the first time. “I like that. They’re very nice animals.”

“They are family to me, Dillon. I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’m only close to my sister, not my parents. We’ve been at odds for years.”
