Not like this.

I keep my head down as I cut through the early morning stream of bodies, but a saccharine voice gives me pause.

“Oh my God, Olivia. What happened?”

Turning slowly, I come face to face with Darcie and her less-than-genuine concerned smile.

“None of your business,” I snap.

“No need to be a bitch, Liv. I’m only looking out for my fellow students.”

“Sure you are,” I murmur. Not wanting to waste another breath on her, I spin on my heel and take off. But she isn’t done, calling after me.

“If you ask me, you probably deserved it.”

“Darcie,” somebody snaps, and I glance back to find Tally Darlington glowering at her.

“Oh look, if it isn’t Miss Goody Two Shoes. Piss off, Tally. This has nothing to do with you.”

“You might be the Queen Bitch of All Hallows’, Darcie, but girls are supposed to stick together over things like this.” Tally offers me a sympathetic smile, and my worst fears are confirmed.

Everyone knows about what happened. Or at least, some watered-down version of events.

Darcie sneers in my direction, but before she can land another blow, I take off down the hall.

“Olivia, wait,” Tally calls after me, but I don’t stop, bursting into the girls’ bathroom. She follows me inside, barking at the girl at the basins to get out.

“Are you okay?” she asks me.

I heave a ragged breath, gawking at her. “I… God, I hate her.”

“Darcie Porter is everything that’s wrong with this world. But I didn’t follow you in here to discuss all her shortcomings. Are you okay?”

“I’ll live.”

“You shouldn’t be in school, Olivia. You need time to—”

“I’m not going to hide away at home. What happened wasn’t even really that—”

“I swear to God, if you try to tell me what happened wasn’t that bad, I will scream.” Her expression turns angry.

“You’re kind of scary when you’re like this.”

“Being Head Girl isn’t easy, you know.” A faint smirk traces her lips. “Especially in a school like All Hallows’.”

“Well, thanks, I guess. You didn’t have to stand up for me like that.”

“We might not be friends, Olivia, but I think we can agree that we share a common enemy.” She gives me a wry smile.

“I guess we can.”

“Do you want me to stay? Get Oakley? I can—”

“No, no. I need a minute, but you don’t need to stay.”

Tally nods. “You might be an Heir’s sister, but you’re okay, Olivia Beckworth.”

Before I can reply, she slips out of the bathroom and leaves me alone.
