I let him have it. “You okay?” I asked, pitching my voice low so no one else heard us.

“Hmm. Yeah. I’m good. Thanks, brother.”

“You’d tell me, if you weren’t?” I probed.

“Fuck no. Don’t worry about me, Duke. That’s Willa’s job.”

“Babe?” I called out, entering the house.

It’s too quiet.

I headed into the kitchen, but Willa wasn’t there. Her car was in the driveway, so I knew she wassomewhere.

I went to her office door and gently knocked.

“Come in,” she called out.

I opened the door and stepped inside. Willa sat in a swiveling office chair behind the up-cycled desk Waverly had made for her. She was looking out the window.

“You working?” I asked. “I can come back.”

“Not working,” she said.

Her voice sounded strange.

“Are you okay?” I asked, stepping further into the room.

“Yeah, I’m okay.” She lifted her mug to her lips.

“For fuck’s sake, you’re scaring me. Will you turn around?” I demanded.

“I’m watching the horses,” she said.

I marched over to her desk, noting the prescription bag sitting near the edge of it.

“Doc prescribed you sleeping pills?” I asked.

When she didn’t reply, I reached for the bag and pulled out the prescription bottle.

I glanced at the label.

Willa turned in her chair, a soft smile playing about her lips.

“Is this—” I swallowed “—for real?”

She nodded.

I set the bottle of prenatal vitamins back onto her desk and crouched down next to her. I placed my hands on her thighs. “You’re pregnant.”

“I’m pregnant.”

“With my baby.”

She snorted. “Who else?” Willa set the mug aside and then plowed her fingers through my hair. “We’re having a baby, Duke.”

I wrapped my arms around her middle and lay my head in her lap, realizing my dreams were coming true.

The front door opened, and the sounds of boisterous teenagers and my best friend’s laughter filled the old home.

I pressed a kiss to her belly and sighed.

Life.

Life filled this home.

My life was in this home. My reason for living. My family.

My Willa.
