“I can’t do my kind of work in the daytime,” says Rosey. “I’d get caught.”

“With the way you work, I’m surprised that hasn’t happened,” he retorts.

“Leon and Max are dead,” I tell him, and he pauses the glass, resting it on his lips. His eyes dart to Rosey, and she nods, confirming it.

“How, when, where?” he asks.

“Their bodies are currently disintegrating in a barrel of acid.”

“Jesus,” I mutter, pinching the bridge of my nose. “Does Jolene know?”

Rosey shakes her head. “She’s having sex with two men, lucky bitch. Dangerous men, apparently.”

“Who?” asks Albert.

“Danny and Curtis Palmer.”

“Palmer,” Albert repeats. “They’re high up in the E15 boys. The ones I told you about,” he tells me.

“Danny and Curtis, they were at the meal tonight,” I say. “She introduced them. Fuck, she had them right under my nose and I didn’t even realise.”

“You think they have anything to do with it?” asks Albert.

“Probably. She’s gonna be devastated.”

“She might be in danger,” adds Rosey.

“I’ll call her first thing and arrange to see her. I should be the one to tell her about her brothers,” I say.

“Maybe Mav can offer up some shelter for her,” suggests Rosey.

“I’m meeting him at ten, I’ll ask,” I say.

“I need the bathroom,” says Rosey, slipping out of the room.

“I’ll meet you at the clubhouse at ten,” Albert says before heading out.

“Do we need to worry about these brothers, Bert?”

He looks back over his shoulder. “I hope not, Art. I really hope not.” I stare at the door for a few minutes after he’s left, wondering what this new information means.

I hear a scream from upstairs and run in the direction of my bedroom, I burst in to find Rosey lying beside Meli, both laughing uncontrollably. “Christ, I thought something was wrong,” I snap.

Rosey laughs harder. “You thought I wouldn’t find out who you had up here? I had to check you weren’t cheating on my best friend.” She pats the bed. “Imagine, all of us together,” she teases.

I roll my eyes. “I’ve got work to do.” I close the door, leaving them to it.

Rosey appears at my office door at nine-thirty. She stretches out. “You have the comfiest bed.”

I arch a brow. “Glad you had a good sleep.”

She grins. “Sorry, were you wanting to climb back in? Yah know, if you’re going to date Meli, you need to get used to having me around.”

“Is that right?”

She nods. “We’re joined at the hip.”

“Apart from that time you walked out of the club for years,” I remind her.
