“Then let me do it at my speed.” She glanced toward the barn. “How’s Sophia?”

“She’s doing just fine. Marshall was out late yesterday and gave her a clean bill of health.”

“She’s lucky.”

“I know. What do you say we take Justin to the zoo tomorrow?”

Her face remained pensive for a few seconds. Then she smiled all over again, which pushed my cock against my jeans. The woman had the ability to erase the shitstorm we were embroiled in. “I’d like that.” She glanced away from me, so many emotions in her eyes.

A shadow fell across her face. “What’s wrong?”

“What if the asshole keeps coming?”

“He won’t.”

“How can you be so certain?” she asked.

“Because I won’t let him.”

She tilted her head. “You’ve already my hero. Don’t be a martyr. Let Gage do his job.”

“He’s not doing it fast enough.”

“The people responsible took great strides in hiding their activities. If they resorted to illegal methods of obtaining your land, Gage will find that out.”

Both she and Bryce had filled in details about what they’d found, including confirming Wren’s thoughts regarding Snake’s property. There were detailed plans for a road extension that had yet to be approved by the county. Bryce had been able to locate the plans, although from what she’d told me, she’d had to call in a few favors. The only name attached to the proposed project? Blue Waters. Who the fuck were these assholes? More important, how had they managed to stay so far below the radar that I’d received zero notification of what was supposed to be presented to the county for their vote at the end of the month?

Only my attorney might be able to provide the answer. I’d called Adam three times since early morning, only to have his secretary provide one excuse after the other. I was getting angrier by the minute.

“You’re right, Wren. One way or the other, the truth will be found.”

“And you’re not going to do anything stupid. Remember?”

Laughing, I slid my index finger down the side of her face. “I don’t plan on it.”

“Good. Cause hell hath no fury like a pissed-off woman.” She smiled, rising onto her tiptoes to kiss my lips.

“I need to make one last phone call. I also have a work thing I need to take care of. I won’t be gone for long. I’ve called my ranch foreman. He’s going to hang around until I get back.”

“You’re worried.”

Exhaling, I brushed my knuckles down her arm, enjoying the way she was trembling from my touch. “I’m just being cautious. Keep the doors locked. I’ll have my phone with me.”

“Are you certain you need to? Justin’s asking for you.”

“He had a huge couple of days. I’ll put him to bed early so you don’t need to worry about it.”

“I don’t mind actually.” When she smiled again, there was nothing I wanted more than to curl up with her in my arms by the fire. We’d be able to do that soon enough.

“How about we both do it?”

“Deal. I’ll get him ready for bed,” she said, immediately retreating. “Oh, and don’t be gone too long. I need you.”

Issuing a slight growl, I waited until the door closed before making the call.

Adam answered on the third ring.

“Adam Reynolds.”
