When Teddy released his hold on me and backed away so we could right ourselves, we simply smiled and laughed together.

I found my clothes and got dressed. “What were you doing at the bar tonight?”

He tossed the full condom in the nearby waste bin. “Diego called and asked if I could help him out tonight as an extra bouncer to beef up security. When he got the call about the wedding party head counts, it was double what they had originally reserved, so he wanted to make sure that all his bases were covered.”

“That was smart of him. He has good business sense.”

“Yeah, he does. And what were you doing here tonight?”

“Barbie wanted to double date, but you know . . . us being out in public probably isn’t the best idea. I’m sorry.” I hated doing this to us.

He cupped my cheeks and kissed my nose. “It’s fine. For now. I’m trying to be patient. Go back out there and have fun with your friends, but if you want to dance, then come and find me. I’ll be the only one dancing with you, even if it’s here in this stockroom. Understood?”

“So demanding, Teddy. I like it. And understood,” I responded.

He moved for the door. But I stood up on my tip-toes and kissed his cheek. “And thanks for the quick fuck. Talk about hot and sexy.” As I walked out the door, he grabbed a handful of my ass.

Monday afternoon, Barbie called me just as I was preparing for my class. “Do you want to go for drinks after work? You still owe me details of your weekend with Teddy. Was it hot?” she asked.

There was an echo to the sound of her voice, so I knew she had me on speakerphone. I hated when she did that. I kept telling her to stop, but she claimed being hands free helped to get her work done and I made it less boring when she could have a conversation with me at the same time.

“No, I can’t. I already have plans. Plus, it’s only Monday, too early for drinks after work, not even close to the weekend yet,” I responded, still slightly hungover and tired from the weekend.

“What could be more important than hanging with your bestie?”

“Meeting with Teddy, of course, sorry. We’re studying at the coffee shop for starters. We’ll see what happens after.” If I could go have a drink out, I would take Teddy. Somewhere we could have fancy cocktails, and get dressed up to spend a few hours sitting at the bar, talking and laughing together.

Barbie didn’t make a quick comeback from my comment, so I said nothing either and waited for a moment. Then I heard a click on her end.

“Hang on.” Her voice was clear on the phone now, like she took me off of the speaker. “Karen’s hovering over my desk, needing something. But I want to hear all the details at home later. Have fun drinking your lame black water at the coffee shop.”

I hung up and shook my head at how much life had changed for me over the past couple of months. For the better. And all because I opened my heart to the possibilities with Teddy.

Mia finally arrived, a half hour late, and rushed straight into our corner booth, but whatever. I’d probably have waited all night for her. Still, I gave her shit about it as she sat down, poking fun as usual. I winked. “What was so important that you kept me waiting like this?”

I thoroughly examined her up and down, especially the way the tops of her breasts peaked above her neckline of a low cut, tight royal blue sweater. My tongue wet the center of my bottom lip, feeling very much entitled to the view since I’d mapped her entire body over the weekend. Intimacy made us familiar, and I planned on getting much, much closer every chance we could.

I reached for her hands across the table, and I wanted to lean in and kiss her over the table, in the way a man and woman might greet each other at the end of a day apart. But she ignored me and got right to work, pulling a book, pen, and notepad out of her bag, like the efficient little bitch she was. My sweet Mia.

She wrapped her hair up in a bun and stuffed a pencil in it to keep it in place. Then it was down to business. “Since I was late, we should get started. I had a look at your outline for the research paper—”

“Hello to you too. Yes, my day was fine, thanks for asking. I was especially looking forward to seeing my girl after work. Hold hands, a kiss or two, maybe a make-out session in the car later. And yes, I took the liberty of buying your favorite flavored coffee drink for you. I also bought you one of those orange scones I know you like because I’m sure you were too busy to eat today. You’re welcome.” The sarcasm ripped through my words as I cut her off.

Her eyes darted around the coffee bar before landing back on me. “I’m sorry, baby, but you know we shouldn’t show affection in public.”

“Then why did you suggest tutoring me here at this coffee bar right off campus? We could have gone to your place.”

“Because if we’re alone, we’d get nothing accomplished. I’d probably end up on my knees and, um, taking really good care of you.” She licked her lips and glanced down at my body, stopping at the table’s edge by my navel, where my cock sprang to life below it.

I sighed and cracked open my laptop. “Well, I guess I can forgive you, if you get on your knees for me later.”

Finally, a smile graced her face for me. Her eyes softened, reminding me she feels these things between us, too. If only the rest of the world would go away. The bells went off at the door to the coffee-shop causing her smile to fade and her spine to straighten.
