I started the car and put on my music. Something needed to soothe my frustration. My “Magic Mike list” ought to do the trick. Then I stepped on the gas and peeled out of that parking lot like it had been an Apollo 11 launch.

The entire drive home—still a weird thing to call casa di stepdaddy a home—my hips wiggled along with the sensual songs in my seat.

I grunted when I stopped in front of the house, still not fully recovered from the disappointing interview. It had been the only dance studio within a decent mile range that had an open teaching spot. But he’d drastically failed to pass my vibe.

I sighed. What a joke.

Discouraged, I parked my car in front of the Volt’s mansion and noticed Ares’ fancy car had been fixed. I still wasn’t entirely sure if I regretted smashing it to pieces or not.

I walked up the steps and threw myself through the front door. I hung my light sports jacket into the coat rack in the hallway before entering the living room to spun up the staircase to my room. I brushed my teeth, scrubbing until I tasted copper.

Sauntering back down, I walked from the massive sitting room to the kitchen, passing the marble floor and countertops. A large palm tree sat next to the door of the private entrance toward our bedrooms, the spa and the laundry room, giving the house an exotic vibe I didn’t know I needed. Architecturally, it was such a complex building but still very inviting—since privacy was bound to be respected.

For having two twenty-two-year-olds living here, it was awfully clean. The floor could use a good scrub, and fingerprints dirtied the sliding doors. But it was tidy and didn’t smell bad—

“Oh my god!”

Gagging, I noticed a piece of moldy cheese at the back of the fridge and quickly removed it with a paper towel. I cleaned it up to make sure it didn’t contaminate the other groceries with its pungent smell.

So, they left me surprises.

Great.

Then I groaned again because no tequila. Dammit.

Since there wasn’t any tequila, I took something equally strong—a bottle of vodka—and filled my glass to the brim.

It was late, but the sun was slowly descending, pouring a shade of orange through the windows. The silence in the house was gratifying. I hoped the boys had plans and would stay the hell away from me like they had the past two days.

I rolled my neck on my shoulders and closed my eyes, easing the tension I’d felt since I’d needed to turn my life around a month ago. The wedding last weekend had been fine until Mom and Cary decided to slip out and leave for their honeymoon early that evening.

So, I’d bailed too. And lost one of my favorite shoes.

But that wasn’t part of a Cinderella fairytale, right?

Maybe I shouldn’t have touched Ares’ car. I had broken off the heel of my black pumps and the side-mirror of his Audi.

Oh, well. I didn’t regret it either. He started it, and I wasn’t going to let anyone mess with me anymore.

I ambled over to the large, sliding glass doors and pulled them open. There was an eggshell swing that I’d wanted to crawl into since I’d gotten the tour through the house. It gave off a homey vibe because mother had installed it at our old place, too. The chain didn’t squeak like it did at our previous house, though.

Except for the boys, everything here was smoothed out. The house was exactly what a rockstar mansion would look like. The lawn was stretched out and mowed in perfect horizontal stripes. The bedsheets were probably Egyptian handcraft. A heated swimming pool and hot tub were at their disposal. The two fountains in the garden held fish that couldn’t go up the pump.

Thank God for that. I couldn’t handle slippery dead fish.

I closed my eyes and sipped my drink. Ah, yep. Just what I nee—

The sound of a door slamming open and a fast-paced pitter-patter hauled me out of my relaxation. Someone hurried down through the kitchen, as if being chased. Seconds later, another, heavier set of feet followed.

“Run, run, as fast as you can,” a low voice rumbled, threatening the girl that yelped playfully as she got chased.

She scurried into the hot tub instead of the pool.

Smart move, even if she had nowhere to go. At least it was warm and cozy now that the temperature was easing down.

Oh, and I no longer had to stare at her topless, perky boobs this way.

My eyes darted to my stepbrother’s naked ass as he prowled around the lounge.
