Estimating her escape. Smart.

If I hadn’t been focused on her like a snake ready to strike its prey.

“You should have yourself checked.”

Dita, Sweetness, you should’ve known better. That was way too easy. I smirked. “Are you offering?”

Her hands balled into fists, channeling her anger. That waste of energy fueled mine. Christ, it was hot in here.

She took off her four-inch stilettos, shrinking to her normal height and showing off her cute little piglet toes. They tapped the floor, ready to take a chance on running.

Which she did.

Turning on her heel, she made a run toward the living room. To her disadvantage, not even a small light had been turned on. I knew this house better than her, and so it was no hurdle to catch her by the wrist. A harsh intake of breath when her back bumped against my chest. No struggle. Just a thick swallow and the braveness to collide with my fretfulness.

“Did you have fun?”

“Yes,” she said without hesitating.

I gritted my teeth. “Misha is the last one I wanted to see you with.”

“Why?”

“Because, sweet Dita, he and Rio are the only ones I trust with my life,” I told her, surprising myself with a harsh truth. What I didn’t add was that Misha knew better. Dita was a toy. New and sparkling. And the first polished layers were mine.

“So, are you going to tell me, you and him…”

“We’re just friends.”

“Friends who fuck?”

She huffed. “What? No, I—God, you’re annoying.”

“Annoyingly hot?”

“Annoyingly annoying.”

I placed my mouth on the curve between her neck and shoulder and smiled. “Fair enough.”

Her body didn’t feel as rigid anymore. The banter between us seemed to have relaxed her a bit as we stood here in the semidarkness of the living room. But her hand snaked up to mine, the one holding her at the waist, I waited for her to rip it off her. Instead, it tickled its way up and curled around my wrist where it stayed.

Huh.

My pulse drummed. I bet she felt it underneath her fingertips. Perhaps the jump in it too when she said, “Look, Ares, no clue why it bothers you so much that I’m here. Call me stupid, naïve, whatever, but I’m not going anywhere. I got a new job, friends. My mom is happy and knows I’m safe…”

She turned her head, laying her cheek against my chest, as if she silently added “as safe as I can be”.

Her rumpled posture told me she was a tad broken down, which I should’ve liked more than I did.

Unfortunately, she made me a sap. Weakened, my own vulnerability weathered down.

“The sanctuary isn’t doing well. Something I wanted to tell you before you denied me from ever having kids.”

She shrugged. “Some will call me a hero.”

“Very funny.” I let go of her. Just a little, though. Her body against mine, it felt more than right.

I gave her shoulder a light kiss.
