I turned to him, looking straight into the gut-wrenching silver of his eyes. “Mom is going to think I hit my head harder than the doctors told us.”

“I don’t get it.”

“Of course not. You’re getting the attention you want.”

“You don’t?”

I chewed it over. “Well, yes. But you and I, we’re…”

“We’re what?” He kissed my wrist.

My heart twitched. He did sweet things like that more often. “Not supposed to lie in each other’s bed.”

He snorted. “A little late for that, Double D.”

“How did I end up in here, actually? Besides the Netflix marathons,” I genuinely asked him. I never had trouble getting off with a casual one-nighter I met at a bar, but…

Fine. That only happened once. While I was on a rebound getting over a four-year long relationship. I wasn’t a prude. I just wasn’t a woman willing to pick up guys whenever I needed to scratch an itch. Batteries and vibrating penises fixed that.

“You and I, although we seem to collide, we fit. We rub off on each other. I’m just curious… what will happen when we stop fighting these sparks?” Ares kissed my breastbone. “I’m ninety-nine percent sure our souls affix at some point.”

Oh, wow. Poetry in bed.

I snorted, finding it funny. Who talked like that after he eating pussy? Besides, this was Ares. He was full of shit.

He looked awfully serious in the shaded light of morning sun straying through the screens. “What happened to your cocky attitude?”

“It’s staying in my pants, not that it concerns you. For now.” He pulled me closer and winked saucily. Our sweaty bodies did fit, but I thought I was the only one ignoring that fact. “My hard to your soft.” His hand settled on my hip and yanked my thigh over his. I molded into him. “I can teach you about snakes, make you coffee, and even let you choose what movie we watch. But in the end, it’s inevitable we come together.”

I rolled my eyes, lightening the conversation. “Pun intended?”

“Pun most definitely intended.” He smiled and slapped my behind. “Now, hurry up and put on your boots before our kids think we forgot about them.”

“Fine,” I nipped his lower lip. “But, uh, Ares?”

“Yeah, baby?”

“What about the other one percent?”

Ares licked his lips and stared so deep into my eyes it almost seemed he was going to reap my soul. Then he settled his forehead against mine and closed his eyes. He whispered, “Scouts honor, I’ll keep fucking that pussy hard and good until it’s entirely worn out.”

I shot up and grabbed a pillow to slam into his gorgeous face. It got blocked by both forearms. His boasting laugh gave off vibes of serotonin, and almost made me smile too. But then I remembered what he’d admitted earlier, and it was the best revenge.

I got up and stepped into my red boots, which for some reason had ended up next to his sneakers. Completely bare except for the boots, I opened the door to get some fresh clothes from my own bedroom, and showed Ares my backside one last time.

His pained groan was magnificent.

DITA

Another weekend, another party at the Volt mansion. After coming back from the shelter with Ares, I felt the attack of another headache filter through with a vengeance. I should’ve come home early and take a nap before it had gotten this bad. I’d barely held on during the car ride, feeling nauseous and ready to puke all over the dashboard.

But I felt useful there. To everyone’s surprise, Ares and I teamed up well. Dance was uninhibited and free. Those cages where these animals stayed in were the opposite. They needed humans to care for them.

I’d called off work at Salsation before the spray of water hit me. Luckily, my boss understood. Unfortunately, it didn’t look well to call in sick just two weeks in.

The shower didn’t do anything to ease the stabbing pain, but it did calm my tense muscles. Ares wasn’t happy I closed the door to the bathroom, shutting him out, but what was new?
