She seems to muster up some courage before she speaks. “I really like you, Theo. Spending time with you has become one of my favorite things. It’s almost more enjoyable than planning weddings.” She smirks.

I snort. She’s cute.

“I guess I want to find out where we are taking whatever’s going on here.” She starts to add something, her brows dipping. “I'm not looking for casual. I’m looking for something long-term.”

I weigh my words. “I can tell you that you’re anything but casual, Cassie. Normally, that’s all I have time for, but I like spending time with you too. Not to mention the sex is fucking fire. But I have to be honest. I’m not looking to get married. Ever. So while I’m not against long term, there are traditional milestones that a relationship with me will never hit.”

Her beautiful face is thoughtful and I’m worried right here and now that this is the end. I should probably think long and hard on that, but I won’t.

“Thank you for your honesty.” She leans against the island counter, opposite of me, now facing each other. She pulls her bottom lip between her teeth and the urge to take her lip between my own burns deep.

“I think—no, I want to be okay with this, Theo. I don’t want to lose out on something special because neither of us is willing to compromise.”

“I won’t compromise on getting married,” I reinforce. I need her to understand this.

She waves her hand. “Yes, I get that. What I mean is that if you’re willing to commit to the long game, I’m saying that I could get on board with”—she pauses—“not marrying you someday.” Unshed tears shine in her eyes. I can hear the slight shake in her voice. That was a hard admission for her. I want to wrap her up and tell her I’ll marry her tomorrow if that meant I could see her smile for the rest of my life.

But I won’t.

I can’t.

Not for Cassie, not for anyone. She has to be okay with who I am right now, or things between us will never work.

I can give her only two things in this moment. One of them would be ill-placed and not well received at the moment. I swallow hard and open myself up as much as I can.

“I’m falling in love with you, Cassie.”

A watery smile and sparkling eyes meet my gaze, and I can’t help but grin like a fool back at her.

“I’m probably already in love with you, Theo. I don’t do anything half-assed.”

My grin falters and for a moment I feel guilty until she moves in closer.

The urge to touch her is too strong, so I reach out and take her hand to pull her in for a kiss.

She goes up on her tiptoes and returns my kiss with a fierceness that says so much more than the words we’ve just shared.

I spin her around and the next thing I know, I’m nearly dragging her straight to my bedroom.

She giggles behind me. “On a mission, I see.”

“Yeah. I confessed my love and now it’s time to give you my other gift.”

“A gift?” she squeals.

“Yeah, my dick. I’ve wanted to give it to you ever since you got here, but I was good and waited.” I stop short and pull her into me, kissing her hard, swallowing her answering laugh.

Pulling back, she replies, “Look at you and all that self-control. Now let’s lose it for a while, Mr. Abbot.”

Her sly grin shimmies past me, then she runs up the stairs.

And fucking hell if I’m not laughing like a fool as I chase after her.

If only I knew shit was about to hit the fan and the lightness in my chest wasn’t a fucking impostor.
