Epilogue

My vision tunneled as I stormed through the Compound, my clothes still covered in dirt and grime from the warehouse, my face smeared with sweat and dust. I should go and clean up before I did this, but I didn’t care. I needed answers, and I would not back down this time.

I went straight for our office building, but instead of heading up, I headed down, to the below level: the prisoners’ cells.

The Delta guards on duty jumped to attention at my arrival, their uniforms rumpled, eyes wild when they saluted me. They weren’t expecting me, but neither was she.

“Keys,” I barked. The guards scurried, one of them yanking the ring of heavy iron keys from the wall and handing them quickly over to me. I grabbed them without hesitation and descended into the row of cells.

The entire space was eerily quiet as I walked to the end, the thumping of my boots echoing off the walls. But I wasn’t alone in this dank, miserable place. One more person was here, residing behind the bars—her new home.

Vanessa sat on her cot, knees pulled up to her chest. She no longer looked like the perfectly-quaffed physician, but a prisoner. Her hair was a tangled, mottled mess, her eyes dry but cheeks still stained from what I could only assume was hours’ worth of tears. Her white silk shirt was smeared with sweat and dirt, the pocket of her pants ripped. She was a mess, but she was here. She knew the truth, she knewsomething, and I wasn’t playing games any longer.

“You knew,” I growled, my fingers curling around the bars, my eyes glowing brightly, my wolf no longer scared of this new person I was becoming. It was here for me, just in time to face the storm that loomed ahead, the battle waiting on the horizon. “You knew who Elliot was this whole time.”

“Yes,” she whispered, her lips pressed against her knee; but I still heard the admission of guilt. “But it’s not like you think. None of this is what you think.”

I shoved the key into the door, ripping it open and storing in. It was completely idiotic to be here alone, but the rest of my Faction wasn’t far behind. And I couldn't wait. I needed answers.

“Did you know he was after me?” I kicked her bed, attempting to get her to focus on me, but still she just stared at the floor. “That he was obsessed with me?”

Her chin lifted from its perch. “What are you talking about?”

I narrowed my gaze, evaluating her tone. She really didn’t know the answer to that particular question.

No matter, there were still plenty I could ask.

“Tell me everything,” I demanded. “Everything you know about him and what he’s planning to do to Kazola. No more lies, no more secrets. The truth, Vanessa.”

We stared at each other for a few fleeting moments, a battle of wills clashing in the air between us. Conflict flashed across her face, twisting her features as she decided what was the best choice for her own safety. I let out a low growl, a warning that the only way forward for her was with the truth.

“Elliot isn’t who you think he is,” she finally said. “He is a mastermind, a leader. He is much more dangerous than the petty murderer you all believe him to be.”

“And why is that?”

“Because he is leading a revolution.” Her frown deepened, her eyes igniting as she stared straight into mine. “And if you don’t hurry, he’ll end us all.”
