“Your friend then. He must have pull with Colt’s agent.” Granted, the ranch was high dollar, likely worth millions.

“Yup,” he said, selecting wine instead of a beer. Then he grabbed a cold one for himself. I could easily tell he knew the singer. “He’s an asshole if you ask me.”

He should have known me better by now. I wasn’t going to let it go. When he walked away in a huff, I caught up with him in a few seconds, yanking his arm. “Oh, no, you don’t. How do you know him?”

His glare was surprising. Then his expression softened. “He’s from Missoula. He ran with a crowd.”

When he pulled away, heading back were we’d come from, even brushing past me, I used my stern voice on him. “You mean the crowd you ran with? The Missoula Bad Boys or something?”

He stopped short, whipping around and taking two long strides in my direction. I was momentarily thrown. “Don’t ask about shit you don’t know.”

“You’re right. You keep asking me questions about my life, but you refuse to tell me about yours.” I wasn’t going to back down. Not to him. Not to anyone.

The darkness couldn’t hide his aggravation, but he softened, his smirk turning to a grin, his eyes settling on the way I’d slammed my hand on my hip. “You’re not going to let this go, are you?”

“Not a chance, buster.”

He flicked his gaze over my head then took my hand. “Come with me.”

“Where are we going?”

“Where I say.”

“The big he-man.”

“Yup. Either come with me or I’ll carry you there.” There was amusement in his tone but I knew he meant it.

“As long as you tell me the truth.”

“What did I tell you before?”

I tromped behind him for a few seconds before purposely moving in front, taking the lead. “I’m always good,” I muttered for no other reason that he wasn’t going to get the last word in.

For a few seconds, we kept the same stride. Then I realized he’d pulled back. Swiveling, I took a sip of wine on purpose, tapping my boot on the ground.

“Do you know where you’re going?” he asked.

“That big building over there.” I pointed, assuming that’s where he wanted to take me.

“You think you know everything. Don’t you, Lily?” He kicked his boot in the gravel and had an ah-shucks look on his face, as if we were kids in high school and I’d teased him.

“What I know is that you’re avoiding the past.”

Snickering, he shook his head. “You should talk.”

“Fine. Let’s get this over with.” Maybe his bad behavior had rubbed off on me. I headed to the large facility, never once turning to look if he was following. Sam made his way inside first as soon as I threw open the door. Once inside, I was thrown into a moment of shock, enough so I barely registered he’d moved behind me.

Sam went nuts, flying around me and immediately burying his nose in a bucket full of balls.

Woof. Woof!

All I could do was laugh, spinning in circle after circle.

“What do you think?” he asked in a tone that suggested he’d been baiting me in order to get me in here.

“This is amazing.” There was no way to describe the setting, the interior reminding me of a resort for humans with children. There was an indoor pool with slides, several playgrounds, and bins full of colorful toys and balls. None of them for humans. I spun around in another circle before racing from one side to the other, touching almost everything at least once.

The glass doors of several rooms highlighted bathing facilities, dogs spas complete with shelves of various shampoos in festive colors.
