“I’m so glad we felt it tonight. This redeems that moment during the battle. Our Union does not belong to that night.”

“It transcends time, danger, and distance. Do you remember when I once told you I have seen the world through your eyes?”

A smile crossed her face. “Yes. I remember thinking that no one had ever seen things from my point of view before.”

“I did—literally. I’m afraid you weren’t aware of it at the time. It was not intentional, you understand. It took hold of me, the way this connection overtook us tonight.” He tried to gather his thoughts to explain it to her. “In Tenebra, at Caelum’s temple day feast, all I could think about was you sitting across the room from me. I was trying to understand you through the Blood Union. Then suddenly, I was seeing the room through your eyes. I could look down at my feet and see Knight there. I felt myself trying not to look at the king. When I looked across the room and saw Initiate Ambassador Deukalion sitting at table, it startled me back into my own thoughts. Entering your mind so intimately went against all my convictions not to abuse my mind magery. But I did not even try to do it.”

There came no anger in her aura. “You must have gotten an eyeful of yourself. I couldn’t stop staring at you.”

He couldn’t hold back a grin. “It was the first hope I had that I had earned your notice.”

“I hate to remember how cold I was to you then.” She shook her head, cuddling closer to him. “And yet all that time ago, when we hardly knew each other, our minds achieved Union.”

“I realized later it was a sign of our Grace bond. I just had no idea we could both experience it like this when one of us is still mortal.”

“Maybe your mind magery makes it possible for us. Or maybe my mystery affinity does it. Do you think it will happen more often, now that we’ll be together all the time?”

He caressed her face, pushing her tousled hair back. “I hope so.”

He reached for her thoughts again. He sought the paths that had led him so near her and turned mere impressions into words, made her inner voice into magic. Her eyes glazed, and she rested her forehead on his. Her thoughts wrapped around him as always. But he fumbled for the connection he had just felt while they had made love. It did not come to him. He did not hear her voice in his mind.

“I’m not sure I know how to open our Union on purpose.” He tried not to feel disappointed. It was already extraordinary that they had enjoyed even a touch of what was to come. But now that the connection escaped him, a powerful sense of longing knocked the wind out of his sails.

She stroked his chest. “You aren’t used to that. It must be difficult for you.”

“I admit, I have seldom encountered the limits of my power. What good is it to be one of the three most powerful Hesperine thelemancers in history if I can’t…mind-feast…with my Grace as much as I please?”

“Mind-feasting,” she said with relish. “Don’t worry, my love. We don’t have long to wait. Soon, I will be a Hesperine, and we will have everything our hearts desire. Forever.”
