I shake my head, denying it.

He raises an eyebrow at me. “You know wolf shifters can tell when somebody is lying.”

I swallow hard. “My dad told me the truth last night—about my adoption and why he left here. He told me about his mate that died. But when I told him the truth about me, he ran away.”

Parker puts his arms around me and squeezes me against him. “It’ll be okay. Your dad isn’t going to abandon you. He probably just needed time to process what you told him.”

I relax into Parker’s embrace.

He’s right. My dad does need time. But if he reacted like that to what I told him, how will he react when I show him my wings?

Parker pulls back. “We should head to school.”

I get in the Jeep, grinning when I see the coffee cup in the center console. I don’t wait for Parker to hand it to me. I grab it, taking a sip. Parker smiles widely at me as he gets in. My stomach churns when I think about how I’m deceiving him. But how can I tell him the truth?

“So… what kind of supernaturals have wings?” I ask, trying to be subtle about it. But I feel like he will figure it out from my question alone.

If he realizes, he doesn’t react. “Only shifters—raven shifters and dragon shifters. But don’t get excited. You’re not either of those. I’d be able to recognize it from your scent.”

“It would be cool to fly,” I comment, hating how my heart races at the prospect.

Idowant to fly. I want to spread my wings and soar amongst the clouds. What would it be like to look down at the earth from so high up? I can almost taste the freedom.

“I prefer staying on the ground.” Parker shivers. “I hate flying. Being trapped on a tiny airplane miles in the sky is my worst nightmare.”

My heart sinks, but I try not to let it deter me. “Do any supernaturals have wings but stay human? Like their body, I mean.”

“No.” Parker shakes his head.

My stomach sinks as I realize… I’m a freak, even in the supernatural community.

I drink my coffee, not asking any more questions the rest of the way to school. I can’t keep talking about supernaturals with wings. If I do, Parker is going to figure it out.

When we get to school, I notice a few wolf shifters giving me curious looks as Parker and I walk hand in hand down the hallway. They typically ignore me.

“Why is your pack staring at me?” I ask Parker.

“Because you smell stronger,” he answers. “Everybody is wondering what you are. I think people are waiting for you to shift or come into your powers.”

“Do you have any theories about what I am?” I ask as we stop outside my first period class.

He nods. “A few, but they’re all unlikely. I’ve considered that maybe you’re a hybrid—a perfect blend of two different species.”

“Are hybrids rare?” I ask.

“No. There are lots of hybrids, even in my pack. But usually a hybrid, while having traits from both species, is only one. Like, take Will for example. He’s a hybrid elemental and wolf shifter—”

My eyes widen. “Will’s a hybrid?”

“Yeah,” he answers. “But he’s mostly wolf. He has small control of air. So my theory is, maybe you’re a true hybrid. Maybe you’re equally two different species, making you smell so unique. But it’s just a theory. The truth is, I have no idea what you are.”

I consider his words. Maybe he’s right. Maybe I’m part dragon shifter. But my wings don’t look like dragon wings. I didn’t take the time to study them last night, but I seem to recall them being more feather-like. So maybe I’m part raven shifter. My wingsareblack.

“What species can read human’s minds?” I ask. “Not vampires, right? I don’t think I could handle drinking blood.”

He chuckles. “No. Vampires don’t have powers likethat. Besides, you smell nothing like a vampire. Vampires smell… coppery. Like blood.”

I wrinkle my nose. “Gross.”
