“They have to be at least three sizes too small! How did you even get those on?” Liza giggled as she noticed how the fabric was pasted on his muscular calves and thighs.

“Well, there was a little issue.” Miller turned to show her the back. A cackle escaped Liza’s mouth when she spotted a slit down the butt seam. His bright red boxers peeked through the hole.

When Miller turned to face her, he flashed her an ear-to-ear grin that made her heart swell. “You can just patch that, can’t you?”

“I mean, I could—but I’m not going to." Liza circled around him. "We’re getting you some dress pants that actually fit. And don’t worry about it being expensive, I am an extremely talented bargain shopper.”

Miller crossed his arms in front of his chest. “I have a hard time believing that.”

“Why?”

“Because… you always look so… matchy.”

Liz brought her hands to her hips. “Matchy, huh? Well, you might be surprised, but one of my favorite places to shop is a thrift store. I love the variety they offer—different fabrics, styles, and eras. I feel like a treasure hunter.”

“Let’s hope you can find some cheap treasure…”

“I happen to know that Sunday is half-off day at Oakville Bargain Boutique, so you’re in luck. I bet I can find you an entire outfit for under thirty dollars.” Liza didn’t tell him that she intended to buy his clothes. She figured his stubbornness and pride would argue about her paying, but it was for an event he was only going to because of her. “Do you have time to come with me?”

“Uh… yeah, probably. I guess it depends when you’re thinking."

Liza plopped onto the futon, tucking her legs in pretzel style. “Well, tomorrow I need to finish Maggie’s wedding dress. And then Sunday morning, she guilted me into having a ‘sister day.’ She was all, ‘Chase and I will be heading back to LA, so you might not get to see me for awhile after the wedding.’ That morning she’s coming over for the big dress reveal. Oh, and then she’s dragging me to church, and finally, abondinglunch… So how does Sunday afternoon sound? Maybe around two?”

“That works.” Miller turned back to the bathroom and then stopped. Looking over his shoulder he asked, “You’re sure we can’t just use these?”

“No!” Liza laughed. “We need to burn those!”

A few minutes later, Miller reappeared in gray sweatpants and a black sweatshirt. “Do you mind if I go for a quick run? Malachi and Austin, the high school volunteers, will be here in about a half hour.”

“Yeah, that’s totally fine. I’ll just go hang out with the pups. I’m sure Randall misses me.”

Miller's gaze washed over her. “As your boyfriend for the week, should I be worried?”

“Maybe, things are getting pretty serious between us.”

Miller revealed his heart-melting full smile before turning and heading out the door. What is happening!?Liza wondered as she sank back into the futon.

Were Miller Brooks and I just flirting?

Liza buried her face in the blanket and tried to ignore the butterflies banging into her ribs.

Okay, Liza. Focus. Time to shoot a promo for the 5k.

Walking into the bathroom, she attempted an elegant messy bun. However, she had forgotten her makeup bag.Thank goodness for filters.Tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, she headed for the kennels.

After positioning herself in front of a plain white wall, she pressed record.

Chapter 16

Miller

Millertappedastopsign, marking the end of his four mile run. As he began walking back toward the rescue, he grabbed his phone out of his arm band. He almost dropped it when he saw three text messages. He usually received one, at the most, per day.

Miller clicked on the top message, which happened to be from his mom. “Who is @LizaEcklandDesgins!? Why didn’t you tell me you had a girlfriend?”

Confused, he clicked on the next text from Captain Tate. “So… things with Liza are going well I see.”

The final message was from Kenny, a high school classmate that Miller only interacted with because he now worked at the local hardware store. It simply said, “Dude, your girlfriend is hot. How’d you score her?”
