“Then why aren’t you sleeping with her now?”

I sigh.

“I guess I’m an asshole. I didn’t call her afterwards, even though I kept thinking about it. But then I’d put it off until another day, and the longer I waited, the more I felt like it was too late, and I should just leave her alone. If I call now, she’ll probably cuss me out,” I finish miserably.

Jethro squints his eyes.

“I don’t buy that shit. It’s not procrastination. You didn’t call for a reason,” he says in a flat tone.

Slowly, I nod, realizing that my friend’s not going to be fooled.

“She’s young,” I mumble sheepishly as I rub the back of my neck. “So yeah, I turns out I had some morals.”

My friend’s eyes light up then.

“Oh yeah? Just how young? Like young professional young? College young? Or even younger?”

I sputter.

“You’re such a fucking dickwad. Are you fucking kidding me?”

Jethro snickers evilly.

“Ok, real young then.”

I sputter again.

“I don’t know Sam’s exact age but yeah, my guess is that she was in high-school when we hooked up. I mean, she was just so tight.”

Jethro shakes his head and chuckles as he claps my back. “My man, you make me so proud, but then again this is Randy Sterling we’re talking about. Okay yeah, high school is a little early but remember that little girls have to grow up at some point. Besides, if she was as good in bed as you say, I think it’s safe to say that she might’ve had some practice before,” he winks. “So don’t feel so guilty! Again, they all grow up.”

I open my mouth to say something rude in return, but then the shrill sound of the phone interrupts us, and I leap to answer it. It’s the red phone mounted on the wall, and I know what that means. Sure enough, the 9-1-1 dispatcher relays the emergency, and I hang up with a resigned click.

Jethro and I look at each other and he asks, “Me?”

I shake my head.

“Naw, it’s fine. I’ll go.”

Jethro claps me on the back once again. “Have fun, buddy. While you’re running in and out of the fire, be sure to think of the mystery girl again!”

I merely snort because what the fuck is wrong with this guy? He’s such a dick to be talking about sex when I’m trying to respond to an emergency. But I merely shrug on my firefighter’s jacket and then make my way to the fire station’s SUV. It isn’t too often that we get a call like this about a cat being stuck on a roof, and I expect the emergency will be over soon enough. It’s just another day in the life.

As I whiz down the road, idly, I wonder if I should call Sam after this is over and done with. After all, maybe Jethro’s right. Maybe I should reach out to the curvy girl because she’s the best I’ve ever had, and I can’t seem to get her out of my mind. Plus, as the saying goes, better late than never. Maybe she’ll refuse to take my call, or even worse, maybe Samantha doesn’t even remember who I am. But I’ll take my chances because my guess is that the curvy girl remembers me just fine, and that we’ll be re-lighting the fire all over again when we meet.
