“It’s too early.”

“Ha! Yes, but I haven’t had a second one yet. It might just be my body getting ready. I was taking a nap, and the baby kicked me, starting up my sciatica.”

“Oh no. Is he still moving around?”

Katrina had to stop and think about that one, running her hands across her belly. “He moved at five. Not since that I can remember.”

Maggie didn’t know anything more about having babies than Katrina did. “Let me ask Justin, the veterinarian.”

“Okay.”

She heard Maggie calling Justin’s name and their chatter and she came right back online.

“He said you need to call your doctor if he doesn’t move in the next hour. They need to move at least ten times in two hours. They may ask you to come in to take a non-stress test, whatever that is, to make sure baby David isn’t in distress.”

“I had no idea,” Katrina said, shocked but not worried. He’d just moved when she woke up before five.

“Is Dave home yet?”

“He just left to run uptown to get me food.”

“Okay, it’s six so it’s been an hour since he moved, right?”

“Yes, about that long. I’ll be waiting for him to move.”

“I love you, girlfriend. Sit down with your feet elevated, Justin just said to tell you.”

“It’s what I’m doing.”

They said goodbye and ended the call. Now she’d have to deal with Dave, who’d said her charming story about her mother had helped him, but when faced with a crisis might not be so calm. Anything she said about the baby would be blown out of proportion, so she decided to wait until seven when she would call the doctor if the baby hadn’t moved.

Five minutes later, she heard the truck zoom up into the driveway, the door slam, and he came barreling through the door. She’d forgotten to tell Maggie to tell Justinnotto call Dave.

“Come on,” he said, offering his hand. “I already called the doctor and she’s meeting us in the ER.”

“How could you have already talked to her? I just hung up from Maggie.”

“I called her when I left about the contraction before Justin called. Come on. You can eat in the car.”

“I’d better hold off eating,” she said. “Just in case I’m really in labor.”

“Good point,” Dave said.

He ran back to the bedroom to get the overnight bag that she’d already packed in preparation. With his arm around her, he led her to the door.

“There’s no one to call. Maggie and Justin were it. No parents, no other friends or family. It’s kind of depressing.”

“Aw, Katrina, I’m sorry. It is sad. We want to announce to the world that he’s coming. But like you said, your mother probably already knows. What about my dad? Do you want to call Annie?”

“I’ll text her,” Katrina said, getting out her phone. “You can phone your dad.”

She sent a quick text.Going to the hospital to see if this is a false alarm.

She didn’t get a response so she figured she was either busy with her baby, in class, or studying.

“I’m shutting off my phone.”

“Good idea,” he said, grabbing her hand. “Anyone needs any news, they can call me.”
