“By yourself?” he asked. “We’ve gone over this already, Shelby. You shouldn’t go to Paris on your own. Let me come with you. I’m sure that I can get the day off.”

“No,” she said. “While I appreciate your offer, I’m not going into the city alone. I’m going with two guests that checked in last night. I cleaned their rooms today, and well, they asked me to hang out with them tomorrow.”

“That’s even worse, Shelby,” Henry said. “You can’t go into the city with two guys you just met.”

“You really need to make up your mind about the rules here, Henry,” she said. “First you tell me not to go into Paris alone, and now, I can’t go with two American guys I just met. If you keep changing the rules, how will I know which ones to follow?” she asked.

He looked her over as if trying to decide what to say next to her. “How about you promise to call me when your little day trip is over? That way, I’ll know that they didn’t murder you and leave your body in town.”

She laughed at the idea of Declan or Tanner being murderers, but Henry was right, she didn’t know them and for all she did know about them, they could very well be killers. “Fine,” she agreed. “I promise to call you just as soon as I get back tomorrow night. It might be late though.”

“I don’t care,” he said. “I’ll be on duty tomorrow night and if you play your cards right, maybe I’ll even bring you up an ice cream sundae.”

She couldn’t help her smile. “Fine,” she said. “I’ll text you as soon as I get back to the hotel.”

“Thanks, doll,” he said. She giggled at what he called her. Henry was always calling her little terms of endearment. He said that he was working them out, trying to find one that fit with her personality, but so far, he hadn’t come up with the right one.

“No, that one doesn’t seem right either,” he said on his way out of her room. “Bon appetite,” he called back over his shoulder as he shut her hotel room door.
